Health Insurance

A question for all you great moms out there ::

My husband and I are looking for health insurance now that we are self-employed and are looking for resources. In the past, with corporate insurance plans, we were appalled at the amount of money spent every month on our behalf for services we didn't want to use. We were fortunate enough to have a plan that covered chiropractic and acupuncture, but found that it was always a big fight to get the insurance company to manage the plan as advertised and they rarely paid our claims correctly. So now that we will be paying all the costs ourselves, we are even more reluctant to go with a traditional insurance plan.

We have considered high-deductible insurance for catastrophic illness and "self-insuring" (or paying out of pocket) for standard visits to the chiropractor, teeth-cleaning, and other health-care costs. We would like to avoid paying huge amounts of money for services we don't use. But because we have little experience with this we would like some advice from others who may have charted this territory before. Do you have any information or advice to share? Or do you know resources we should be on the look-out for?

Blessings to you all,
Travis

We used www.ehealthinsurance.com.
The site has you fill out a form and then finds plans that fit your needs. If you find one you like, you can apply for it right there.
We found a great plan with Blue Shield.

You can also look into a Medical Savings Account (MSA). Do a search on the web to get more detailed information, but we carry one ourselves, and my husband sells insurance, so he sells alot of these.

Basically, you pay out of pocket for all expenses until the family reaches the (high) decuctible. It's not right for everyone, but for us it works well.

If you do the math, using our family as an example, we were paying 4800.00/year in premiums, with a 250.00/person deductible. We almost never met the deductable, so we end up spending the 4800.00 + the 1000.00 every year. With an MSA, we pay only about 3000.00/year on premiums.

Anyway, do a search and see if it would work for you.
