Urgent question re:lice

Eve has lice. I need to treat her and the rest of us. I think Gabby might have it, and dh and myself. I've read about natural remedies like olive oil, mayonnaise, dawn dish soap and I was wondering-do these things really work?? Eve is hard to bathe in the first place, she hates it! I don't want to torture her anymore than I have to. The doctors office recommends Nix, but I don't want to use that chemical crap. I could buy some lice stuff at the health food store, but they are just as expensive as the others. And with 5 people, treatment could easily cost us over $200 when all is said and done, $200 we can't afford! HELP!

I heard that the present day louse is a strong bugger, so to speak. Many of the old methods no longer work on them. I had a friend try the mayonnaise and it didn't work. The OTC brand for lice didn't work, either. She was told to use Hartz Flea and Tick dog shampoo. Not natural in the least, but it did work.

The health dept told me that the Nix and Rid can cause seizures and definetly NOT to use it on young children, PLUS alot of lice have become resistant to it.

We had it 2 years ago now, and we "smothered " them with strong essential oils mixed in olive oil, and combed each others hair 2-3 times a day. Pick out all the knits (eggs) everyday and kill any lice you comb out. Vaccuum furniture daily, launder sheets daily. Bag up most your laundry and cloth toys and dolls, do not bring them out until lice is over with. You are going to have to wash and dry, everything. Use a hair dryer on your kids hair also. It took us 5 days to get completely rid of them.

Heres how I got rid of them last year when our 5 yr old had them.I took mayonnaise and mixed a bunch of it in a cup with about a tablespoon of white vinegar and 15 drops of Grapefruit seed extract.I then coated her hair and scalp with it thoroughly and put one of those plastic produce bags on the back of her head tightly so that it covered her hairline completely. She then played around the house for 3 hours (you could do it overnight for even better results but she freaked at the idea)and then I washed the goop out,put some conditioner on her hair and proceeded to comb out the (mostly dead) bugs and eggs. the mayo seems to smother them and the vinegar heps loosen the cement on the nits. The results were equal to or not better than when I used the chemical stuff on my kids several years ago.The secret is to keep combing out any newly hatched bugs and eggs every day.I think I repeated the mayo/vinegar stuff the 2nd day and then after that would just wash her hair and use some conditioner and nit comb every day. After the 2nd or 3rd day,I stopped seeing bugs but it did take a while to get all of the nits out.You have to have a bright light to really see them.Ive heard there is a product called kleer or something similar that works only to dissolve the cement on the nits. The bugs are easy to comb out.Its the nits that make it hard to get rid of it.I vacuumed rugs, floors and furniture really well, changed all the beds and after that just washed pillow cases and towels every day.

Don't forget to vacuum carseats and car seats. Did that make sense?

My nephews had this a few years ago. They got ride of them easily by doing the following. Saturate hair with oil
( vegatable any kind is fine ) and vinigar ,this kills the adults and softens the eggs. Then they wraped their hair in a bag and left it on for 30 min. Then they washed it out with dish soap and combed out the softened eggs. Throw all bedding in the wash and put pillows and comforters in a hot dryer for 1 hour. Vacuum every thing else and throw out the bag imedietly.Good luck, and don't feel bad it can happen to any one!
