I found a way to get rid of fruit flies!!!!

I don't know if this will help anyone else, and you may already know this, but I thought I would post it just in case. Last week, we some how woke to find tons of fruit flies in the kitchen. We tried removing everything we thought they could be breeding in, but they only got worse. After a search online, I find a wonderful solution that actualy worked. I took a glass jar and put a small piece of fruit in it (I tried a slice of banana as well as a slice of pear). Then, I took a piece of paper, rolled it into a cone shape, taped it so it didn't unroll, and put it into the glass jar small end down. The flies were attracted to the fruit and flew in, but could not find their way out. I'm sure some might have escaped, but after a few hours the jar was full! I did it again overnight, and for most of the next day, and I haven't seen any flies for a few days now

Great tip! I think we got rid of most of our fruit flies but they are so annoying!

Super, thanks so much for sharing!

I've never had them but what a great idea!

I do this all the time when those pesky critters come in on bananas. Except use apple cider vinegar instead of fruit. They can't get up out of the cone, and then they fall into the vinegar and drown.

Completely off topic but ustasmom, where do you live in the valley? I used to live in MOunt Jackson near New Market. It was just kind of cool to see your location. I went to Stonewall Jackson High School for a couple of years before I moved.

I heard about apple cider vinegar as well, but decided to use fruit, so I could release them My husband thinks I'm crazy, but at least they're gone!

Does the vinegar work quickly as well?

i normally will remove allf ruit and then pace some sweet liquid in a bowl in the sink..and then when they come I silently sneak behind them and spray them with whatever and then flush them down the sink

This is great! I've been battling those awful suckers for two weeks now. Blech!

Yes, thank you! I was given some plants, and they had them in the dirt...so now I got a crop of those annoying little critters....

I'm gonna try both! Vinegar and fruit! I think the water bowl and sprayer idea is funny! hahah

My dad does a variation on the liquid in a bowl method for fleas the cat might bring in.

He puts a dish of water down under a nightlight. The warmth of the light attracts them; they fall into the water when leaping for it; he gets rid of them in the morning.

I'll be keeping these methods in mind as I've been seeing more of the little buggers than I care for. I just brought in most of the rest of the tomato crop and I don't want to share with them!

Thanks so much for the tip! We've had fruit flies galore around here and besides chasing them with the vacuum end of the shop vac, I didn't know what to do!

Does it have to be a glass jar?
