Diaper Rash

I took my son to my mother's for a little while and she put him in 'sposies while he was there : . The result-his entire bottom is red with some welts and oozing.

His diaper rash almost always takes a couple of weeks before it starts to heal. I let him run around without a diaper for a while (about 10 min) each time I change him. I only use clear water to clean him when I do change. I don't use powders and I hate using desitin or a&d on him because it just doesn't seem like it helps. Anyone have any wonder cures? I'm willing to try almost anything--I hate to hear him crying because it's so raw!

It's not a miracle cure .. but if his pee is irritating the rash, you can use lansinoh on his lil bum. When DD was in the NICU one of the dumb nurses put a sposie on her and she got a horrible welty bloody raw rash, and that's what helped us clear it up. Still took a week or so though.

Aw, poor little guy! My little one always comes home with a red bottom after spending the night at his grandma's. I get this ointment from the health food store, not sure what it is called. It comes in a tube though, and isn't harsh or medicine smelling at all.

I wonder if there is some kind of soak I can put him in to help with the pain? Any ideas?

I got out the lanolin this morning but he screams so loud, I hate to put it on him.

Well, this isn't the most natural of remedies but it works wonders on oozing, blistery or bleeding rashes: mix together Desitin (or maybe any zinc oxide cream), Aquaphor, and liquid Maalox until it's well-blended then apply thickly. I used it last week on my babe's blistery, bleeding rash (I don't know why she got it, that has never happened with any of my babies before) and it worked very quickly to give her relief.

It's expensive, but California Baby Calendula Cream works well for my little guy. Now I have to admit, he's never had a severe diaper rash, but the few times he's had any irritation, I've put this on him and it's worked really well. HTH!

Have you tried breastmilk? Really! It worked wonders on ds' bloody, ulcerous-looking rash from eating grapes when he was a babe.

Coconut oil or jojoba oil might be soothing, and they wouldn't cause painful friction to spread on.

Plain full-fat yogurt is good for yeasty rashes, but I don't know whether it might burn a raw one.

Poor baby!

Forgot! Here's an ointment that I've used for dd! You need to have access to buk herbs, though.

1 to 1 1/2 cup coconut oil
1/2 oz. EACH dried comfrey leaf, shredded marshmallow root, chamomile & calendula flowers
2 drops lavender essential oil (optional but helpful)

(If you're missing any of the herbs, never mind, carry on. Make it up with a little more of another.)

Melt coconut oil in a non-aluminum pan over very very low heat. Test temp by sprinkling in a pinch of dried herbs. They should not sizzle.

Add herbs, crushing in your clean hand first. Shake pan gently to submerge all herbs. Cover tightly.

Continue to warm oil for 4-6 hours, 6 is better.

Line a METAL strainer with some muslin. Pour the herbal mixture through into a non-plastic container. Being careful not to burn yourself, twist the muslin up to wring all the oil out of the herbs. These last drops tend to be the strongest. Discard the herb residue.

Stir in the lavender oil.

Store in fridge, covered. Avoid re-melting. Can be used as soon as comfortably warm. Might stain cloth diapers, so use cheapie prefolds.

I always put apricot oil in the bath or directly on the bum. the poop will slide of easier than desitin type creams.

Weleda Calendula cream is a 'wonder cure' in my book. Son gets a major 'red butt' if he eats orange stuff or citric acid. I have had to do the following, and it heals in a day or two...even REALLY red, blistery rash.

Grind some oatmeal in the blender until some of it is powdered. Put in an old sock, nylon stocking foot, or a cloth and tie at top. Place in a bath of 'just warm' water and let him sit and soak for a bit.

SLATHER on the Calendula cream, so you don't rub...put him in just a cotton diaper (flat or prefold). Keep an eye on him for it getting wet, change often. I put thick, old towels down where he likes to sit. Can also do this with NO diaper, if you brave enough...

Let as much air get to it as possible. Also, if it's sunny and warm where you are, get some 'sunshine' on them buns (even a few minutes will help dry and heal them)

If it's yeasty or he has open sores, make sure you cleanse (use your peri bottle or a squirt bottle with warm water and a tiny bit of TTO or Jason TTO soap in it) to kill off bacteria and yeast after every diaper change. You need to keep them clean until they heal over. Also, if he poops, you need to use the wash (don't rub at him...just squirt, squirt and pat dry bum, being as careful as possible NOT to rub. I even gave my DS a 'sitz bath' when he'd poop...just to avoid rubbing.

I feel for you and him!!
