i'm new to this so bear with me...?'s on "delaying" vax...

i'm sure this has been addressed several times so if it's a tired subject, please forgive me. but no one i personally know is non-vax'ing so i need some 1st hand advice. DD is 3mos old and we have gotten her 2 Hep B and 1st round (i don't even know what those are! am i terrible? Hib, i think, varicella...the typical 2 month shots...4 at once). the day of her 2mo. shots she was tired and crabby...pretty tired/crabby for the next day or 2 after. i wouldn't call her reaction "alarming" but she seemed out of sorts for a few hours (not right after but a few hours later). just that reaction alone made me think about vax'ing. i know we want to do it but i always hear about "delaying" vax and am not sure what this means and what benefits there are over getting them all done at once (besides pain relief...which i feel is huge but is it any better to spread painful shots over an extended period?) does "delaying" refer to having them done after she is 3 years old...and which shots? or is it having them done one at a time over a longer period? which shots are best delayed? someone - briefly, if possible - please explain the difference between delaying and not. thanks so much!

We are delaying shots by giving no more than one shot at a time. Typical 4 month shots would be Hep. B, HIB, IPV, DTaP, and Prevnar. That is shots for 7 diseases!!! We also don't give any shots when my DD is even slightly sick. We don't plan on giving her any Hep. B, Hep. A or CP shots. I like Stephanie Cave's book on vaccinations. She has a delayed schedule but we have stretched it out more. We have also gone in for shot only visits where all we get is a shot and then we are out of there. Good luck!

We are delaying vax'ing too. I read Cave's book about the subject and found it very interesting and helpful (but this was prior to ds birth and I can't remember some details so I may reread one day. We decided that if we were going to vax then it was going to be done slowly. I have very strong feelings about certain vaxs and we will not have ds get them. However, we plan on traveling to Central America and Cuba one day (family) and so therefore we feel it necessary to vax.

DS is almost 5 mo and he has had 2 vaxs thus far. Hib and DTaP. He had no reactions to either of them thankfully.

I have a close friend whose boys are vaccine damaged. She strongly believes this and I must support her in this. She has done extensive research and feels that if she had to do it over she would not vaccine her kids. I am not where she is so I felt that the next best thing would be delaying.

When I spoke to doc he said that vaccines are very safe and there is no data to show the connection between vaxs and Autism. In any event I feel that if my kids are to be vaxed then I want it done under my control. I do find in ridiculous to vax against diseases that are not a threat to my kids such as Hep B.

Any...just my 2 pennies worth.

Sg

Happy SAHM to 4 wonderful boys...Daniel 12, Ruben 9, Lorenzo 6 and our newest addition Isaac 4-11-04

I just wanted to add the most important element of delaying vaccines is to delay untill you have researched the topic thoroughly. Either way you choose - you owe it to your child to investigate vaccines fully before administering them to your child who can not speak/research for him/herself.

maybe its not a lot of info but more questions...maybe i'm asking for the impossible but i'm looking for a "simple" answer to what "delaying" really means (in general)...does it mean waiting to do them one at a time or more like waiting for a certain age to do certain shots...????

For me delaying means waiting until my child's immune system has developed (prob not before 4 or 5), giving one shot at a time, and only immunizing for selective diseases (not chiken pox, for example).

For me, delaying means getting shots one at a time, in order of priority and also postponing the "riskier" ones (like the MMR) till much later.
For example, Menengitis and tetanus are diseased that still happen, so I'm probably going to get my DS those by 1 and 1/2 years.
The MMR is, IMO, the most dangerous, so I'll probably wait till he's 7 or 8 to do that.

I suggest reading the following books before you do any more vaxs:

Vaccines: Are they really safe and effetive by Neil Miller

How to have a healthy child in spite of your doctor by Dr. Robert Mendelsohn.

Good Luck
