Financially Swinging Home Birth?

I'm hoping someone here will be able to help with some info. We live in CT, and apparently because CPMs are not recognized in this state, insurance won't cover a home birth. They WILL cover a CNM who does a home birth, but I haven't found one :-) The cost of the midwife whom I contacted is $3000 - more than we can swing. I'm panicked at the idea of having a hospital birth, sure I'll end up in another C-section.

Has anyone challenged their insurance with success? Help!

I couldn't find any CNMs in CT, either, and went back to Nyack, NY for visits to my old m/w from when I lived in Westchester... but I'm right on the NY border and the drive is just under an hour. Her name is Martha Roth and I cannot speak highly enough of her.

That said, I know some midwives (Martha included) will charge on a sliding scale, accept flexible payment plans, and even accept barters in some cases.

Will she attend a home birth? I'm in Brookfield and wouldn't mind the drive if she would do it. I called the insurance company to initiate challenging their policy, but don't want to completely count on a positive ruling. They paid for formula dd didn't eat in the hospital, but wouldn't pay $75 for a lactation consultant

Thanks so much for your help.

Perhaps I'm not understanding something here, but a CPM is a lay midwife, right? If CT does not recognize CPMs then it is illegal for her to deliver your baby in your state. $3000 seems very steep for a lay midwife, esp. if it would put you/her at legal risk. My CNM homebirth midwife charged $4500.

Do you live close to any other state borders? NH, VT, MA? Do you have a friend in a state where lay midwifery is legal?

Are you sure there are no homebirth CNMs near you? Have you posted on the practitioner/ state tribal boards?

lay midwifery is legal in ct. nak, sorry. but ins. won't cover it. ins. will cover a cnm.

yes, cuckoo, Martha's a hb midwife, and just amazing. Although she's a cnm, she's as uninterventionist as you could wish for. It's all whatever you want and are comfortable with. For example, I didn't do rhogam, despite being rh-, didn't do gbs testing, used the same blood tests as for my last pg, which was also with her, etc. Of course, if you DO want the testing, she's fine with that, too.

My birth last week (ds is one week today!) ended up being UC because I didn't want her here til the last possible second, and she was fine with that, too. She was so proud of us! LOL! I confess, I secretly wanted a UC, but dh wasn't completely comfortable with the idea, and having Martha there can be the next best thing, since if you only want someone there "in case" she'll do that, or be as supportive as you could wish for. It just turned out that I got from 6 cm, through transition and pushing in a bit over an hour, total, and had told her on the phone that I thought we had several hours to go yet. She'd have been here 8 hours earlier if I'd wanted her, though.

I'm in Ridgefield, btw., and I know she's driven further to attend hb's.

I can't thank you guys enough. As great as I thought the midwife who I contacted is, I really need to use insurance. And with your recommendations, it doesn't sound as if I'll be unhappy :-) I was getting really unhappy at the thought of a hospital birth.

As for peds, hmmmm, I use Mount Pleasant Pediatrics in Newtown - Dr. Nowacki and a young male doc (don't remember his name, something with an A). They are flexible, but I wish a little more knowledgeable. Dr. Nowacki did practice while carrying her infants in a Bjorn or sling and did bf. That being said, she wanted to give my dd antibiotics for the one and only ear infection she got, and was visibly unhappy with my choice to selectively vax. She made a comment about vaxing all her kids, so I think she sees it as a value judgement against her. At the time she was pushing the MMR and really wasn't informed as to the other point of view, just said that since my dd could point at things, she wouldn't be at risk. When I wanted to order the vax separately she completely lost interest. They've never brought it up after that visit. She also never said anything positive about us still nursing at one, two or three :-). So, flexible - yes, but not a place I really want to stay.

I do know that Dr. Claire Free in Brookfield has been recommended, but I have yet to meet with her. I'm going to use this new baby as my excuse to interview with her. Let me know if you find anyone you particularly like, as well. I'd definitely make the drive for the right ped.

Thanks to so much to all of you!
