we just rented this last night at the recomendation of a good freind,

we loved it! i just love movies that take a real look at how lives can evolve or not. and all the wonderfully deliberate and "fateful" things that can effect it. im going to look and see if the director has done nething else.

Fionnsmom, be careful. I have seen two other Jeunet films, The City of Lost Children and Delicatessen, and while they shared something of the fantasy of Amelie, they were both very dark and disturbing.

I couldn't even sit through The City of Lost Children, it was so disturbing.

I saw Delicatessen years ago, before having children. I'm not sure I could sit through it now, post children.

I loved Amelie. I saw it in the theatre twice last year. I thought it was so inventive and nonstop, like the Cirque de Soliel of film!
Also, everything in it was red, which was really cool (great cinematography/art)
I saw City of Lost Children a long time ago and liked it a lot, it's pretty weird but I didn't find it disturbing. What was funny to me was how calm and cool all the kids were in the film while the adults are like big babies fighting and fussing all the time. The kids just got things done. I think that's probably how they see us in real life anyway.
The set for that movie is VERY dark though.

In City of Lost Children, I couldn't handle all these poor children without mothers, without families, in this dark, scary, violent world. They were calm and collected, but that was because they had been forced into a position where they had to deal.

l couldn't bring myself to watch the whole thing.

We'll have to see Delicatessen and City of Lost Children.... since they're both Jeunet films, I'm assuming they'd be in the foreign film section? They sound very interesting.

Another french film I enjoyed but TeachinMama thought was just weird is "Diva." (violent... about drug smugglers, etc.)

"Amélie" was very entertaining and quirky. I loved the cinematography and the art direction themes. Her eyeballs bugged me though... she looked like a clown... the Cirque du Soleil comparison was right on. I loved the quick-cut fast-motion motifs... it added a lot of zip. I thought the subtitles were a bit corny compared to the actual dialogue. I watched it a few times as my French is rusty but the dialogue is very cleverly composed.

I loved the father scenes.... and I loved the porn shop keeper that the guy worked for... I love films that have odd sidekicks and minor characters that stand out like that.

Yes, they should be in the foreign film section. They are very good and worth seeing if you're comfortable with dark and disturbing films.

You can go to IMDB.com to see what else he's done. I think he actually did one of the Aliens movies, believe it or not.

Hey thanks, I checked that out on IMDB.com.... he did Alien: Resurrection, ironically, the one I disliked the most. My friend John did the score for that one... what an uncomfortable beer we had over that topic (I thought it was the worst score he'd ever written). He kind of disappeared after that... I shouldn't have told him... shoulda just smiled and nodded.

I saved the rest of his filmography so I can go track down more of those films... what a bizarre bio photo of Jeunet on the site.... freaky eyeballs...

Amelie, is so wonderful! I love the message to me, use your life in a positive way, and always put yourself out there like you won't get hurt!

I love the video Amelie makes with the babies swimming! So cute!

Oh, I loved it, too!! We rented it last night and dh, mother-in-law and I ALL loved it. It was just such a sweet movie. And I think the actress is beautiful. I want to watch it again and ignore the subtitles just so I can really see everything.
