a serger-lovin' mama to show me the way.

So, I caved in and bought myself a new toy. The only thing is that it ain't working out too well. Tension's great (apparently), but my threads keep getting tangled or snapping off.

I just don't know...so far, using a serger's no faster than sewing on my trusty ole sewing machine.

HELP - will anyone be my serger mentor (you *can* call me grasshopper if you want) or at least point me in the direction of a couple of good beginning serger books or websites, please?

I found the workbook and video that came with my White serger to be excellent, and I think they sell them separately. In the bookstore or a sewing shop you will find lots of books on serging too ....

When my thread tangles it's often either dull needle or improper threading.

Good luck!

I almost tore my hair out when I got my first serger (the one I was telling you about). It was the tension that was set incorrectly. I have threaded and rethreaded the thing and adjusted the tension until I was blue in the face.
I had Joe thread it, and it was still sewing all f***ed up. He played around with the tension until it FINALLY started to sew beautifully.

Yahoo has a group called "sergers" where there is a bunch of sweet "grandma" types.

Ahhh - thank you ladies. I will double check my tension...as I have threaded the darn thing so many times that I'm pretty sure that my manual will be creased permanently at the threading instructions.

I found a few important things - make sure you thread the needles AFTER you thread the loopers. If the looper thread breaks, re-thread it and then re-thread your needles. If you don't, the looper thread will snap over and over. There is a great book called The Complete Serger Handbook by Chris James. I found it extremely helpful.
