New question...

Does anyone know how easily a baby loses their innate want for sucking? I know that sounds weird, but we are going onto day 12 of our strike, and my ds is finally on antibiotics (and will hopefully be better soon.) We think he has a sinus infection now.
Anyway, since he still isn't nursing, I was wondering if he's going to forget how, or that he wants to. My LLL/LC told me to work on getting him better first and then focus more on getting him back on the breast when he's better (we're still trying in the meantime.)
So I'm just worried that he's been off for so long now (and he's 9 1/2 mos. old) that he's forgetting how much he likes/needs to nurse.
Anyone know?

I don't think that he will forget. If all else fails you can try the almost asleep nurse. It is one of the things that helped my daughter get back to nursing after a 12 day (I think that was how long it lasted) nursing strike.

I'm sure that he will be back nursing like a trooper in a few days. I know how upsetting it is but just know that you are doing everything you can. 2

Thanks sunshine*girl. I appreciate all the responses you've been giving me (on the other related threads). I'm trying to stay hopeful, but with each new day, and still no nursing (I mean none!) I just get worried.
And to everyone else..come on...doesn't anyone else know if they can lose their sucking instinct over time?

I am not entirely sure, so this is just my personal opinion. I would think they would not, mostly because I know my DD still suckles in her sleep and she is far past that age. According to my mom and Dh I still do it occasionally in my sleep, so I think its just plain ol nature to do it. Now whether he will regain interest, I could not say. I definitely pray so for your sake, because I know that my biggest fear is a nursing strike. I have worked VERY hard to keep my son on nursing and if he rejects me it will truly sadden me.

Good luck, and prayers said, fingers crossed, whichever you believe in.

Thanks for checking in mikenabbysmommy . Unfortunately I have very little good news to report. He appears to be getting over the illness. And he doesn't seem as offended by my breasts, but when he's hungry he still get mad if I offer them. But he also gets mad if I try to feed him anything until it gets into his mouth.
I'm actually starting to investigate the possibility of an undiagnosed silent reflux that may have been aggravated by the illness, or the iron supplement that we gave him the night before (He's since been taken off and we are using other options.) He's been spitting up and swallowing for a few months now, and recently started to spit up and out...but of course everyone said that can happen when they start crawling : . I don't really think that's right though. I am planning on going back to the ped on Monday (or tomorrow, but we'd have to see a different doc.) to discuss this as a possible issue, and see if we can try to treat it.
Thanks again to everyone who has been supporting us through this. We are still trying as much as we can to get back on the breast. :
