Steph,
I will try to get to this over the weekend, if I can.....
It would be very interesting to read your research paper when you're done...I really want to see what others had to say in response to your questions

I was unaware that it was illegal in Iowa. I live in Iowa too. I have not had homebirths, but would like to if I have another baby. I have had friends who have. So are the midwives that do homebirths breaking the law?

BTW where are you at in IA? We live near Ames

That is the goofy part, while actually giving birth at home is not illegal direct entry midwifery is illegal in Iowa and yes the midwives who deliver babies at home are breaking the law,it is considered practicing medicine without a license and it is a felony. These midwives risk prosecution when there are complications that is why you have to be very careful when choosing a midwife in Iowa. I know of one midwife who will call an ambulance and leave you alone to deal with the EMT's if there is a problem.

Homebirth is highly frowned upon by CPS, by the way. I had a friend who had problems because of it and it can sometimes be difficult to obtain a birth certificate. Depending on where you are in Iowa, each individual county is different, with the smaller ones usually giving you the most trouble.

I live in Mount Vernon, which is in the CR-IA City Corridor.

I have a question for you, does knowing the legality of the situation change your mind about having a homebirth in Iowa?

no it hasnt changed my mind at all. I had a bad birth experience with an OB for my first birth. I had a good experience with my dds birth. It was in a hospital with a midwife. I had such problems dealing with leaving my ds to go to the hospital. I couldnt imagine leaving 2 kids. I know many people who have had positive homebirth experiences so it doesnt bother me about the legality. I know it would be the right option for our family...if I can talk dh into having another. I had 2 great pregnancies without complications, so I wouldnt expect to have any complications with another.

I am glad it doesn't change your mind. I guess it is an easier decision fof the family to make than it is for the midwife.

It takes a lot of dedication to do something despite the fact that you could get in a lot of trouble. It also makes it difficult to find decent midwives in Iowa.

Do your friends in that area, use Carey Ryan? I have heard good things about her.
