Are vitamin/mineral supplements neccessary for a 16 month old?

DS has an ok diet, if I average it over a week. Spinach (he can't get enough), carrot, various fruits, brown rice, pasta, crackers, soybeans, navy and kidney beans, occasional millet, oats, yogurt. And he averages 5 or 6 nursing sessions in 24 hours. DH wonders if he's lacking in protein, or if he needs a daily supplement. He seems to have good energy and is on target developmentally as far as I can tell. Should I use a supplement just to be sure? What about iron?
He's eating paper envelopes right now as I'm typing, that's good fiber, right? :

Iron Maybe

For some reason when kids slow down on nursing and are eating a lot of table foods they sometime show low in iron. Iron supp. by their self can cause teeth to stain. We use the Flinstone Multvitamin/Mineral supp and find it to work very well.

Minerals are almost more important to supp than vitamins sometimes.

I think in most towns the County Health Nurse will do an iron test for free, if you don't want to take him to a Dr. or something.

That is what we did and turned out our dd did have a low iron around one year and we brought it up with the vitamin/mineral supp.
