Dyeing prefolds?

I am new to this forum. I really want to cloth diaper my next baby and so I have been learning alot and buying good priced diapers when I find them. I got a great lot off of ebay and now I have about 2 dozen cpf's. But they just look so boring. I was wondering if I could dye them, and if so how I would go about doing it? I am also looking for some one to give me some cloth diapering lessons, but that is probably a little too much to ask.

As for the dyeing, you might have better luck asking in sewing and crafts. I've heard the kits at dharmatrading.com are good. You want to make them colorfast so they don't bleed.

If you lived nearby, I'd be happy to give you lessons! I only have one hand to type with at the moment or I'd say more. Searching the forum for things like diapering newborn stash, etc can help as there are lots of other beginners too! Also check out www.diaperpages.com ---Karen has some nice pictorials on prefold folds and laying prefolds in covers, etc.

The board does move fast, but please jump in and ask any questions you may have! If you're getting stuck, PM me and I can try to point you in the right direction when I don't have a napping babe on me!

Please use procion dyes. Anything else will bleed. Like heather said, Dharma offers the best dyes.

There's another dye called Dylon that might be available at Wal-Mart or at other craft stores. I used it on mine, and oit works great!

Just don't use RIT!!! They will bleed!!

Dylon is second best. The reason is, is because it does not provide soda ash to set the dye. Soda ash can be picked up at farm stores though, making dylon a decent choice too.

You could either by the fiber reactive (aka Procion) dyes seperately here http://www.dharmatrading.com/html/eng/3796-AA.shtml

Or you could get a kit from them here http://www.dharmatrading.com/html/eng/3310-AA.shtml

If you are just going to do a couple of things, a kit is the way to go; however, I think only the basic primary colors are included in the kit. So if you wanted to branch out color wise you would have to do some color mixing.

If you go for buying the dyes and supplies individually, that works too. The 2 oz. containers would be enough to dye a bunch of stuff. Also, don't forget to get synthaprol, which is an industrial detergent used by dyers to keep the dye from resettling on the fabric during the rinse cycle. you can get a small amount here

You can get soda ash at your local pool supply store, but if you are already ordering from Dharma, you mine as well get it from them too (it's cheaper).

Dye, soda ash and synthaprol is really all you need to get started dyeing. OH...don't forget a good pair of gloves( unless you like rainbow hands!)

Check out this site for some dye-ing tips http://www.pburch.net/dyeing.shtml

Have fun!
