Celebrity chastised for weaning at five months

From the New York Daily News, Rush & Malloy, this oddly pro-bf slant:

Who cares about the baby? Mommy wants a martini.

Denise Richards has decided to stop breastfeeding Sam, her daughter with actor Charlie Sheen, after just five months.

The buxom Playboy cover model explains that she put the baby on the bottle because she missed bottles of a different sort.

"I felt like I was still pregnant," Richards told USA Today. "I still had to watch what I ate. I couldn't have a cocktail, which I was dying for after being pregnant nine months."

P.S., Denise: Did ya know that the American Academy of Pediatricians says new moms should breastfeed for at least a year to help kids grow and fight disease?
I was floored by this. Weaning at five months is newsworthy? I personally don't like the tone of this, where a woman is being totally disrespected. But on the other hand I'm encouraged to see that a mainstream media outlet thinks breastfeeding past five months is simply the done thing. Such a strong pro-breastfeeding message. I do wish that the P.S. had included the fact that she could still have an occasional martini and she does not particularly have to watch what she eats. All in all I'm pretty excited by this!

LOL...I have to crack up because it floors me how many people wean because they are "dying for a drink"...um, not only can you have the occasional drink while nursing, but it just irks me to see that people are willing to push a child to wean, possibly inflicting long term effects on a baby just so they can drink. Seems pretty strange...

But, I do have to admit, I think it's GREAT that this article was published...maybe people will start to see that 5 months is not a normal weaning time...

But she didn't wean at 5 months, did she? I thought she did the Playboy shoot at 5 months but weaned at 6 weeks.

You may be right--I was just going by what the blurb said about weaning "after just five months." (Heck, for a playboy shoot, my ONLY chance would be during breastfeeding! That's when I've got the big bazookas! :LOL)

Ummm I had a beer last night. And I ran into another nursing mom that we know who has a 2 month old and she said she has a beer in the evening every day after she nurses her son. So it can be done!

the more of these things i read about denise richards, the sadder i get about how uninformed she was/is about bfing.

i wonder how long she would have kept going for if she'd had better information.

I would rather the PS address the fact that you can nurse and drink alcohol (even at the very same time, lol).

I also thought she weaned at 6 weeks, and there have been a variety of reasons given. It wouldn't make any sense to wean *right* before a nude photo shoot anyway, imo.
