soaker shorts "in the round" - HELP! need pointers?

i'm working on a pair of soaker shorts (or pants, haven't decided yet ) for ds. i'm not using a pattern. i'm winging it, using my soaker pattern as a reference.

so far it's going great!! i'm thrilled with the way in the round looks (no wonky edges! YAY!). i'm working from the waist down and i'm about halfway through the body.

i'm starting to get nervous about how i'm going to work the legs. do i want to just work them flat & then seam up the inside? or do i want to round down one leg and then go back and round down the other leg? is the crotch going to be funky?

(btw, i'm crocheting, not knitting)

TIA~

are you planning any kind of crotch gusset? Have you done any extra rows in the back to accomodate for the tush?

did you say "planning"? LOL!! no, no planning. i'm living on the edge here!!!

seriously, so far, i've made a tube about 8" long & i'm ready to do the legs. that's as far as i've gotten. i'm afraid to go any further.

ok, so what's a crotch gussett? gussetts are the things that hold poo in diapers, right? i'm confused - why do i want gussets on shorts?

do you mean somehow making the crotch area wider than just 2 legs meeting in the center? i've thought about that. but "thinking" is as far as i've gotten. i found a picture of wool shorts (knitted) and it looks like the 2 legs just meet in the center. the only pattern i could find (for shorts) crocheted in the round also just has the 2 legs meeting in the center. is that going to give enough room in the crotch?

i was thinking of ways to make the crotch wider and this is all i could come up with (i hope i can explain this)... after i get to the length of my tube, make a few flat (not tube) rows in the back, decreasing rows as i move forward to make a crotch flap (that's the best word i can use to describe it) in a sort of modified triangle shape. attach that to the front, and then tube down my legs. but when i picture that in my head, it looks wonky. in the soakers, the leg openings are kind of in the front which gives the bum some extra room. how do i give the bum extra room without getting all funkafied?

Bump for you.

crotch flap sounds good

extra rows in the back by doing 'short rows' as they are called in knitting. go back and forth a couple times then continue in the round. dont know how to do that in crochet specifically, you'll have to fool with it! oxo pam
