Can I do this?

Total sewing newbie here so no : at my question. I've recently seen some prefolds with nice pieces of fabric sewn down the middle. So can I just go ahead and sew a piece right over top of the existing fabric or do I have to take the pre~fold apart? And what weight/kind of thread would I have to use? The fabric I want to use is flannel.

Yes, you can do it. But, if you snappi, just think about where the snappi will be. You may not be able to use the bottom snappi leg, kwim? I don't think the type of yarn matters at all. It doesn't matter if it's absorbent or not for a dipe. Good luck! and post pics!

I have some prefolds like this, very cute. Flannel will work great, flannel just gets a little pilly with washing, FYI. It will actually add a little absorbancy. I still snappi, I just took the teeth part off the bottom leg on one of my snappis and keep that one for the decorated prefolds. The usual sewing thread is fine, remember that the fabric is a different color than the prefold, so you might want a color for the top thread and white in the bobbin.

I measure the prefold center, length and width, add a half inch all around, and cut my decorative fabric to this measurement. Then I press under a half inch all around the cut piece, center it on the prefold, pin, and topstitch it into place.

HTH!
