What type of yarns can be used for soakers?

I went to my local Hancock Fabrics store looking for yarn to try to knit my first pair of soakers (to use as a diaper cover) and most of the yarn there had barely any wool content The most I found was 75% wool and 25% nylon....would this work as a cover?? I saw a lot of acrylic mixtures, how do these perform?

I'm holding off buying the nice yarns online, to make sure I can actually knit a soaker, but I'm confused about what types of yarns will work

TIA!

Yes, the blends will work. Opinions vary on whether or not superwash wool will work. Acrylic works, too, but differently from wool. Soakers are not hard to make, and you will do yourself a favor by working with good materials. It is hard to learn on yucky yarn. Just make sure that whatever you pick feels good in the hand, and that it holds together will. Very cheap yarn sometimes has a tendency to split, and I find that incredibly annoying. But, you don't have to have the $50 for 4 ounces yarn either. There are lots of good yarns in the middle! Have fun!

I'd just buy nicer yarn and go for it!! You can always unravel the thing if you don't like it..I started learning to knit by working on a project I didn't really like and using cheap yarn and quickly changed my mind and completed my first knitting project with good yarn and a nice pattern..I didn't want to waste a bunch of time on a "practice" project..KWIM?? Good luck!

I agree with the above! I made a couple of soakers with yarn I didn't really like and ds never wore them anyhow. That's a LOT of work for nothing.

Just make sure when you start that you get the right yarn/needles for the pattern you're working on so there is no guesswork and go for it. I've substituted yarn with a different gauge when I didn't know what I was doing and it was a mess... I can do it now okay, but I wish I'd just followed the pattern first and got brave later, kwim?
