Can I dye my CPFs???

I know people dye wool, and hemp all the time, but can I dye my bleached CPFs??

I think it would be great to have them in colors If so... which brand of dye is safe to use?

I dye bleached and unbleached CPFs -- they come out great. I use Dharma Trading co. dyes - the site has all the instructions and other chemicals you need to get.

I dyed some of my CPFs and a few snug-to-fit dipes and it worked fine. Only I used RIT dye and they bled for a long time. I had to use some Shout Dye catcher sheets for a while. I also dyed a few in Kool-Aid, just to see what it would do. I was hoping it would at least tint them. But it just dyed the velcro, which look cool, too. I'm sure some of the other mamas can suggest a good dye to use. Next time, I'll try one of those!

Good luck!

I bought Red Rock dying kit at Michaels Crafts, but I know people have bought these kits at Walmart too. It was a lot of fun to dye ours (we dyed our regular prefolds). I will probably dye our premiums in the future.

I just read the previous post--This kit works fine because it uses procion dyes, which means the dye becomes part of the fabric. I just washed mine about 4 times after we were done, just to make sure they would not bleed.

So, the answer is "Yes you can!"

And now, this thread will be moved to sewing and crafts! :LOL

I dyed my UBCPF's and they turned out great. The dye I got was at walmart in packets hanging in the crafts, can't remember the brand (sorry) the packets were about $1.89 each and each packet dyed two CPF's a dark shade and then I put 1 in and it was slightly lighter (I could have probably dyed more per packet but I wanted a variety of colors. I have use Red, Purple and navy blue. I'm going to try to get green the next time I'm in Walmart. They also have a tye dye kit if you wanted to try that, I think it's $14.99 but would probably do close to a dz prefolds. I think alot of people buy dyes online at dharma trading.

I use procion dyes (from Dharma) - I got started with a Jaquard brand tie-dye kit. The instructions were great, and the diapers came out beautifully! Wanna see?
Or you could just not bother with doing it yourself, and order some already-made-pretty prefolds www.tyedyedreams.com

I dyed a dozen of my prefolds using Dylon Cold, which can be found at Wal-Mart. I did 3 pfs per tin of dye and they came out great!! Have fun!

I've heard it's a real pain to do because you have to rinse and rinse and rinse...is that not true? I'm dying (har har har) to try it but I'm chicken lol. I have some dylon cold dyes and some of the rainbow rocks...I may just have to do it!

This is that same Red Rock (or whatever it's called) dye that the PP mentioned... I used it also, and it dyed my prefolds beautifully!

When I did mine, I rinsed under running water until it ran mostly clear (didn't take too long), and then washed the whole batch on hot with detergent twice. I've had no bleeding. (Mind you, mine were done with the soda-soak tie-dye method, allowing the dye to cure 24 hours before rinsing. other dye methods may give different results as far as rinsing/bleeding go.)

You do have to rinse a lot so they don't bleed when you start washing them with your other diapers but if you do a dz or even half a dz you can just throw them in your washer and run them thru a few cycles after you have rinsed out the darkest of the dye. Thats how I did mine.

Those ARE beautiful!! How did you make the different patterns? Are the pattern instructions in the kit? I was thinking of buying one of the red rock tye dye kits to do the rest of mine. How many prefolds do you think it will do? I think I still have 8 plain ones.

Stell! Those dyed prefolds are stunning! how did you learn to do the patterns???? wow!

Those are mostly floursack flats. One of 'em I folded into quarters and pleated diagonally, one was folded into quarters diagonally & pleated, one I stitched a star into, and pulled p the threads to section that part off, and then the classic spiral and one was just pulled up from the center. The prefold I did with a spiral, but it didn't turn out too well. My technique has since improved

I think you could do maybe 5 prefolds with a 5-shirt tie-dye kit. PF's definitely suck up a lot of dye, though, so you might want to get a bigger kit from Dharma if you want to do a bunch.

You have to wash different color SEPERATELY, right? until no more color bleeding?

Well, I dyed purple and dark blue the same day and rinsed them in the bath tub to get most of the dye out then ran them in the washer together and they didn't transfer onto each other. I just ran them on a small wash load like three times. You could probably get it all out running under the faucet in your sink or bath tub but I figured that would use more water than in the washing machine.

If the colors are similar you would be OK. But no pink & navy together. LOL!
