I have a ?

First of all, thanks to all of you that answered my numerous questions months ago when I was trying to decide if I was going to circ or not.

I'm sure all of you will be thrilled to know, that we decided we did not want our child's genitals mutilated, and Lucas is intact.

Anyhow, we have had a awful time nursing, and had thrush for the last 3 weeks, it is now in the diaper area.

I want to use Gold Bond Baby powder, but want to make sure it's ok to use that on a uncirc'ed baby.

Does anyone know if it's ok to use?

TIA~ Jodi

I don't think the powder would be a problem in general ... but I also don't think it represents the solution to your thrush problem. What are you doing for the two of you at the source? If you have had thrush for three weeks, it sounds like it is time to really get serious about a treatment. Have you had any help with it?

That's my concern, just for the two of you nursing. Thrush is awful! (BTDT)

I would give GSE a try and then replace your healthy gut flora.http://www.nutriteam.com/gse.htm#thrush

Include some inulin powder for yourself too. Gentian violet works well too,but is messy.I would try GSE first. Best wishes.Congrats on your intact little one.

You can use anything on an intact baby that you would use on a circumcised baby except a knife. :LOL

I think powder in general in general is not good for the diaper area, unless it's pure cornstarch - baby powder or any powder based on talc is not recommended because it has very fine particles and can cause problems when inhaled.

For yeast in the diaper area, go to the drug store and get a generic athlete's foot or yeast infection ointment, and use that at every change.

Also head over to www.kellymom.com for her page of links on yeast treatments - as you know, you need to treat both of you systemically to get rid of it.

Good luck - the evil yeastie beasties suck!

Use a diluted white vinegar rinse on the diaper area. Add 1 C of white vinegar to the rinse cycle on your diapers and all clothing that comes into contact w/ milk or the diaper area. Lie baby in a clean diaper, but nude from the waist down a couple times a day.

Take pro-biotics. Open a capsule and rub some inside baby's mouth twice a day. Avoid sugars and white flour in your diet.

Gold Bond ain't gonna do it.

And PS to Quirky's post... cornstarch feeds yeast so cornstarch based powders make yeast problems worse. I looked up the gold bond brand before replying and I don't think it has cornstarch in it.

What I use for a baby yeast diaper rash is a medicated special remedy mix from our pediatrician, it has Nystatin in it- and something else. It works great, it's just a light ointment, like room temp butter- nothing gloppy.

When we went through the breast/oral thrush thing I went the messy purple route and it worked for us. Just a note thought, you are not supposed to use Gentian Violet for over 4 days (I think... it's been a while) Also you should probably be careful to do the rest of the household cleaning routine- to wash your bedding and towels and bras- and rinse with a cup of vinegar in the rinse cycle. Olive oil is also a nice edible anti-fungal that you can put on yourself between treatments to try to hold the yeast at bay.

Sarah, we have been treated, and nothing has worked.
My MW *just* put me on 2weeks of diflucan with APNO and GV for 5 days.

Lucas is getting another round of gv

The powder was recommended in Susun Weed's book, i figured I would use it until we could get into the ped's office on Fri.

Actually it's cleared up quite a bit, so maybe it does work ?

That's good to hear that the powder seems to be helping... the other treatments might be helping too...(I sure hope so!) so it might be hard to know exactly where the credit goes- but as long as you guys feel better that's all that counts!

Here's to continued healing!

Jodi, I would definitely stop using the Gold Bond if I were you. I like Susun Weed but I believe her advice is off-base here. The powder definitely has talc in it (if you're using the regular powder, not their cornstarch-only baby powder) which is unsafe for use, especially with babies.

Also check out this Environmental Working Group report on Gold Bond, which rates it as a 6.8 out of 10 (where 10 is the worst) for potential health concerns and untested ingredients: http://www.ewg.org/reports/skindeep/...prod_id=900884

If you use an anti-yeast cream and and feel you must you powder, follow up with pure cornstarch baby powder. But I really think the Gold Bond is not good to use on your baby's tender bits (or near his tender lungs).

Wow Quirky, thanks for posting that. I will NOT be using that again.

I have never used powder on my kids, but soo much of her advice has been a blessing to us, I thought I would try it.

Thanks again for posting it!
