Weird gauge question

On size 6 needles, I get 24 stitches by 32 rows.
On 7s I get 20 stitches by 29 rows....

Huh? What the heck size needle do I use? I have tried fudging it with both sizes but end up getting the totally wrong sizing for my project .

Thanks mamas! I got it

Are you using different yarn than suggested? That can affect your gauge a whole lot, even if it seems to be very similar.
Generally, the stitch gauge is more important than the row gauge, so try and get that. In your case, I would go to size 5 needles.

I'm not sure what is going on. I am using the right kind of yarn (worsted weight). I was thinking about trying size 5s, but at this point I'm a little afraid.

Last night I adjusted the pattern for size 6 needles, I think it will be ok, but all the math is a pain in zee arse.

Maybe I will just try it on the size 5s first...sigh....
