My Tivo is my best friend.

Yep, got a Tivo. It's been really great and all, but here in Portland we're having trouble with channel lineups. Tivo won't get the PBS lineup anymore!!! And it's the only channel we watch! So we are going to attempt cancelling the subscription (which we really can't afford anymore anyway) and manually programming it, using it as basically a digital VCR to record during the time periods with our shows. We really only watch two shows anyway! :

They've got a great help forum on their discussion board if you ever have problems!

I want TIVO.
is it expensive?

I can't even IMAGINE trying to watch TV without TiVo anymore. I mean, how do you watch TV with young children and not use the pause button? Or the rewind? We have had ours for about a year and LOVELOVELOVE it!

I miss TiVo! My birthday is coming up, and I've been dropping a lot of not-so-subtle hints about TiVo.

Love my Tivo

Polka-

I was amazed how cheap a DVR is!!! That is *if* you already have digital cable and your cable co. carries the service. In my area, I pay an extra $5 a month for the actual "box"/machine and the service...and it is SOOOOOO worth it! Like other posters have said, I don't know how I ever survived without it, with small children in the house!

Why I LOVE my DVR:

1) You can pause and rewind whatever you are watching
2) You look ahead and record whatever you want and aren't needing to stop what you are doing to watch TV or tape something
3) When you watch, you fly thru the commercials
4) Less tape rentals because I can tape movies
5) Always a *good* kids show ready to go when kids want to watch but nothing good is on
6) Kids can watch their favorites (Sesame St. or Maisy) over and over without me finding the tape etc..
7) Its okay if you fall asleep in the middle of a show! Watch it again later!

Who can think of more?

Ok what is the difference btwn Tivo and DVR or are they the same thing? For $5 a month I would SOOOOO get this. My dh swears that TIVO is going under and it's only a matter of time. I am DESPERATE!!! to get this. I HATE commercials and would love to not have to ever see another one again!

yeah right. Tivo is going under. You obviously haven't been to the Tivo community, HAHAHAHAHA

Yes there is a difference in the services. I pay more than 5 dollars a month for the DVR we have. So check with your local cable company. I pay about 15 dollars a month which is more than my Tivo service.

With Tivo, you get wishlists that can search for shows by catagories, titles, keywords, actors, directors ect and you can auto record them if you want to. You also get suggestions based on your viewing habits. You get a guide that goes 2 weeks ahead. You can see all the upcoming times a movie or show will be on in the next 2 weeks on one screen. It is so much easier to plan your recordings. You also can go into a show that is currently recording and watch it from the begining without having to rewind like you do with our DVR. I can't do any of those things with my cable company DVR. IMO my cable comanies DVR is just like a digital VCR. Tivo is so much more than that. Plus if you network Tivo with your computir you can access your pictures and music from your comutor hard drive and watch them through your TV. Tivo also has remote scheduling from any computor if you have your Tivo networked and have internet access. I also find that it is much easier to FF to the perfect spot with the Tivo because it has a tiny delay that stops it where you want. Hard to explain but much better than the DVR.

On the plus side of the DVR is that there is no initial outlay in cost to purchase and ours will record two shows at once. But the features and ease of use for the Tivo more than outweighs that for me. I'm buying a second Tivo.

LOVE my TiVo. We were among the first 1000 people to own one, and we have now added a second. We personally have 5 friends/ family members who have bought one because of us. Wouldn't watch TV without it- I don't want DD to see commercials when she gets bigger. (She only watches U2 DVD's now.)

TiVO ROCKS!!!

ok, I have Dig cable now.. I'll have to call them.
but is the actual TiVO expensive?
Another I LOVE MY TIVO!

Thinking about getting a second one.

We paid about $250 for the machine plus another $250 for the lifetime subscription. Otherwise, I think it is about $12 a month to subscribe to the Tivo service. You can check out www.tivo.com for more information.

thanks for the info !

LOVE Tivo here too! One unfortunate side effect though...sometimes I want to rewind something a neighbor says when I haven't been paying close enough attention...it's always jarring.

Another TiVo lover here! We started out with the stand-alone TiVo, with cable. Now we have two Direct TV TiVo's (satellite), so we can record four channels at one time! Yes, we watch too much TV. : But now that we've experienced TiVo, we can never go back to watching the regular way! We've converted about five of our family members. I tried converting my bf, but she just didn't "get" it. :

Glad to see other TiVo lovers here! I would try to convert everyone, if I could (I sound like an advertisement for TiVo whenever the topic comes up in discussion anywhere).

I would have thrown our TV of fa tall building by now if it wasn't for TiVo!

I have a generic DVR, not a Tivo. I didn't have to *buy* any equipment and pay an additional 5 something a month for the equipment and service. It sounds like my DVR does most of the things a TiVo does: I can rewind and watch the beginning of a show in progress. I can look ahead (only a week, not two) to pre-set recording options or chose to record a program daily, weekly etc. I can search and do most of all the cool stuff listed. I can network with a computer.

Because I just have ONE digital cable line into my house, I can only record one program at a time. So, if I am recording something on our primary TV (where the DVR is) and DH wants to come in and watch a little football on another channel, he can't. (But he or the kids could watch anything that had been previously recorded.) So, we sometimes fight about what I am recording because he wants to stop my recording so he can sit down and watch football or ESPN or whatever since I am not even around. Instead he has to go watch TV in the kitchen or someplace less comfortable, which frusterates him. So.....that's how maybe a fancier Tivo system could be better than what I have. But I am pretty pleased considering the low cost I am paying.

TiVo is very cool. Dh got one waaay back when, and they offered him free life-time membership. They're probably a little frustrated with him now!

Now if only there was TiVo for the radio! There have been many times I have wanted to rewind someone on NPR because I missed a comment.

LOVE our TiVo!!! Can't imagine not having it now!
