TV when kids are sick... OK, don't club me, but I say... OK :. A little bit to get over a lot of sick, I think a video isn't the end of the world. There is not much for a mom to with a zoned out feverish child after you have read every book, rocked, sung, etc. and they still need a disraction or you need to start the laundry from the barfed-on bed linens or make a phone call to the doctor. My son has had a few bouts recently with being really sick and having to stay in bed/quiet. We rented a few DVDs from the library and put them on the laptop and he maybe watched 1 a day... As soon as he started feeling better and was again interested in books and could sit up for a little play, we returned them and the "TV" was gone again. He got a bit of a dose of some old school Sesame Street and a bit of Bob The Builder. I can live with that. Sometimes, desperate times call for desperate measures and you have to do what you can.
My philosophy is- when TV takes away from your life, its bad. And I think it does, about 99% of the time, as there is a whole world out there to explore instead of sitting in front of the TV! Occasionally, there are programs or movies that are actually worthwhile, and a family movie night or a nature program or something once in a while can be fun. And sometimes, life hands you lemons and a little age appropriate TV when all else fails can make bad times not quite so bad until things get better. If my child watches 10 hours of TV (library DVDs) A YEAR because he is sick, I'm ok with that. He was not "wasting his time" or giving up doing something enriching because he was parked in front of the TV. Those were not 10 hours better spent doing something else. They were traded for 10 hours of pain and whining and medicine...
