Felt board

Okay, my dad made me one of these when I was little and I loved it. So, I want to make one for my ds. I think he covered mine with left-over carpet and it was green, but that's the extent of my memory. Would it be as easy as buying some neutral colored felt and a piece of plywood and then stapling/nailing the felt on the board? I want it to last for a while ... and hopefully look nice. Any suggestions? (I'm actually more adept at things than this post appears : but for some reason just can't get this one through my head. )

ETA: I have only a vague idea as to why I posted this here. I was thinking, wow a felt board would be cool for homeschooling ... acting out stories, etc, so I think I'll post about it in the homeschooling forum. After reading my post, I realized, hmm ... this is more of a sewing and crafts post ... bear with me please!

At some point I had a bunch of feltboard websites bookmarked...I think I deleted that folder, though. Anyway, the point is that there are websites that give ideas on how to make feltboards. I used foamcore, duct tape and glue for a large one (I also sewed felt into pockets to make a feltboard book, coplete with pocket and carrying straps). You may want to consider gluing or doublestick-taping the felt to the front of the board so it doesn't get all saggy.

Come to think of it, there was a yahoo group dedicated to feltboard ideas -- things you could print out, cut out, etc., to put on your feltboard once it's made.

I made feltboards for my son and his friend when they were toddlers. We had a big piece of particle board lying around so I used that, using a staple gun to attach the felt in back. I can't remember what shapes I made for it, but I remember I just used regular felt from the craft store. I'm not that good at crafting stuff, so I'm sure if I can do it anyone can!

I have one that folds up and I've gotten felt pieces to go with favorite stories. I'd love to hear HOW exactly you all use your boards and pieces, for fun and "school."

You can also use a piece of flannel for the board and that will "adhere" to the felt pieces just as well IMO-and it can be cheaper than felt depending on where you buy it. You can certainly use the craft felt but the wool felt tends to last longer if that matters to you but it is more expensive. Wool felt is denser so won't stretch out as much.
Good luck

I bought 2 felt boards and the pieces never stick to them, my kids gave up on using them. I might try making one with flannel since I think the pieces would stick better.

Good luck!

I just made my daughter a felt board and it was so easy.I went to walmart and bought 2 yards of felt on the bolt for like 1.74 a yard. And then I had a piece of wood that was about 2x2 and about 1/2-an inch thick. I coverd it with felt, and they have the square pieces of felt in the fabric dept. of walmart and they are about .20 cents a piece. And I made up, and I made things like shapes, fruits, leaves, trees, and things that went with holidays. Now I'm getting ready to make some felt people. My daughter loves it. Have fun with it. Use felt and flannel pieces. Old scraps of fabric around the house. Use your imagination!! Goood luck
