Well, she might circ, she might not.... help! - Page 2

Steph-

I see you're in Michigan and I am too. A lot of what you described sounded quite a bit like what some of my friends have experienced at our local hospital (although I don't know a single child that received nerve block ) and so I'm curious as to what hospital this was at. I have been really trying to get legislators, the media, the doctors, etc. to stop and think about the number of children in our area circed without pain relief and so if you're in the area, I'd love to have some local help with this.

Thanks.

It was the Hillsdale Community Health Center. As for the nerve block- I'm curious whether this is something new at the hospital or not. Last year when I had DS I was told they didn't do a nerve block- They did something else?? (Of course, that was after the circ was done that they told me that, they also wouldn't let me give him tylenol b/c they said if he got an infection his temp would go up, if he had tylenol they wouldn't know his true temp).

I talked to her today and she asked me to email her the rest of the links I had on circumcision. She broke down and told me how she already regrets it and she hasn't changed a single diaper since it happened. She has her mom change them. I guess last night he started screaming and so she had to call the nurse in to ask why. The nurse said he probably peed and that it would burn him to do so and walked out I'm so angry for this mom. Something needs to be done with these nurses/doctors.

I just PM'd with your sister. I'm very close to your area but our hospital is far worse. They are circing babies before they are 24 hours old (some 12). My hospital has you sign the pathetic consent form during labor so that they can take your baby anytime and have the circ done unbeknownst to you. Most of the circs at my hospital are done in the wee hours of the morning when moms are sleeping and babies aren't returned until hours afterward. They use no anesthesia, yet tell parents that they are offering pain relief. Most parents have no idea that the "relief" they are offering is tylenol and sugar-water. Most of the mothers have a similar story to yours---they have no idea what pain relief is given. My hospital will not allow parents to view their child's circ. My cousin's baby was circed without anesthesia after being released from the NICU with a collapsed lung despite the fact that I gave her a copy of an email I got from DOC saying that he was at high risk for a heart attack or other serious complications because of his health. It's sick and disgusting and the hospital won't respond to my letters and the newspaper refuses to get involved. I am at my wit's end trying to figure out how to stop this.

Which means that the circumcisions are not done by the mother's OB or Ped but instead, by a third shift intern that has very little experience. This also gives the babies time to stop screaming as well as to stop turning red or being in a semi comatose state.

My DS's was done when he was 17 hours old I really don't remember signing any papers on it, but I wouldn't doubt it if they snuck it in there before I had him or if they did it when I was half asleep or something. But I don't remember signing it. His was done first thing in the morning. They brought me breakfast so I was putting him in the bassinett beside me. That's when they took him. It was done by the Ped that was there (not his, but one that works in the same practice his did).

If you didn't actually sign a consent form, you may have legal recourse against the doctors. The consent form will be a permanent part of your son's medical records.

Prior to the 1970's, it was very common for doctors to circumcise without the consent of the parents and even against the express consent and wishes of the parents. About 1973, a parent sued the doctor who circumcised their son and since, consent forms have become standard operating procedure. However, that does not mean that they get the consent form signed every single time and there are incidences where they have not and have even gone to extreme lengths to get it signed after the fact. You can ask (demand) that you see your son's records to see if they did get your consent. If they did not, you have an actionable legal case and should pursue it.

The circs at our hospital are done by the ped on call that day. Parents really have no idea which one is doing it. There are no interns at our hospital, small town.

For those of you I whined to earlier in the thread, I got to really help a girl in my childbirth class, and bottom line was, at the end of the day she was saying "I don't know why I was even considdering doing that" So, my energies are all renewed, and again I see we DO accomplish a lot.

In my state, if they circ without your permission it's medical malpractice only. Not battery or assult and definitely not sexual assault. And if your state is anything like mine, no doctor will get in trouble for doing it because the med mal standard is what other doctors do in the same area. Here, that's circumsizing every baby boy!
