I've been following a thread on another forum - a debate board on a forum dedicated to women taking control of their own fertility.... (not to name names) - the op asked "do you believe in corporal punishment" .... you will not believe the number of parents (majority, if not all, women) who believe it is perfectly acceptable to hit, swat, smack, etc., their children. Even their 16 and 27 month old children. But no fear, this particular parent who hits her 16 month old only does it "as a last resort." I just started imagining that misguided woman spanking her 16 month old?
98% of the posters felt it was okay to "swat" or "smack" their child on the hand when the child was "misbehaving."
The consensus ran along these lines: I was hit as a kid, I didn't turn out to be a serial killer, the threat of being spanked "worked" for me, therefore, it is a perfectly appropriate way to deal with my child.
I just didn't know where to go with my disgust at the attitudes and my sympathy for those kids.
I hope no one minds but I referred them to this forum - particularly the list of GD books. I'm hoping that maybe if they realize there are other effective ways to discipline, maybe...? Mods, if that wasn't okay, let me know and I'll remove the reference from my post on that board.
edited b/c I just realized if any of those moms did check out the GD book list, they'd see this post... I'm not going to delete this post. this is how I feel. I'm not posting these feelings on the other board b/c I don't want to attack anyone but I've got to go somewhere with these feelings.
