WA homeschool laws, Help!

My son went to kindergarten last year and we've decided to homeschool now. I know the age for compulsory attendance in WA is 8, but I thought I read somewhere that I have to officially unenroll him. When I called the school district to do this they asked how old he was (I told her 6) and said that they would send me the form. Well, what they sent me was the letter of intent to homeschool that we have to file every year, but not until he is 8. A few people I have asked have given me different answers. School is starting soon and I think we can get in trouble for breaking truancy laws............Help, does anyone know?
Do I have to unenroll him or not? Thanks!!

In most places the schools are too overwhelmed to deal with truancy laws. Since they don't seem to have a form, I would send a letter stating that you are withdrawing your child to homeschool. That should officially unenroll him.

I'm not in WA, but this would seem like a simple cover your a** thing to do. The rule is most likely there so that kids don't just disappear with the teacher having a clue what happened to them.

I am in WA and I homeschool. Because you put your son into "the system" for kindergarten, you have to file the letter of intent every year, before Sept. 15th.

If you have any other children that you will be HS and not putting into the PS, then you won't have to file the LOI untilo they are age 8.

Here's a link to the "Pink Book" for WA. http://www.k12.wa.us/learnteachsupp/homebased/ Under "Resources", take the first link to the Pink Book. It's a .pdf file, so you have to have Adobe Acrobat to read it. But it's the "manual" for teaching at home in the state - regarding the laws.

Have fun!
