Nightwaking at 4 years? What's up?

My son has all of a sudden started night waking. He'll start to cry saying things like he didn't get enough kisses at bedtime or that he forgot to water his plant or some such (seemingly) trivial thing. He may be up for a couple hours wimpering - even after visits from mom and dad to comfort, kiss, tuck in, get water, whatever.

This is a kid who slept all night starting at 6 weeks and never looked back. He's been in his own room since 18 months and that transition was similarly seamless.

So what gives? Why this all of a sudden? It might happen two or three times a week.

Part of me wonders if he notes that the baby is up at night and receives attention. But I'm not sure a 4 year old could be so rational about it so as to force himself to wake up.

Any ideas?

Stress maybe? How old is the new baby? It could be something is bothering him. HAs there been any major changes in life, scheduals, routines? It is amazing what we as adults may find minor, are extrememly major to little ones... Maybe try a couple days of extra time with him at night before bed.. Just cuddling and talking...

4 is when the nightmares start. The age of vivid imagination. We are going through this also.
