Easy skirt pattern

Hi everyone,
I'm VERY new to sewing (I've done a couple of hems on my ds's clothes/diapers). My dh bought me a sewing machine for my birthday and I need a project to practice on. I'd been thinking of getting some new skirts for myself and wondered if it was something I could reasonably do on my machine. I'm just looking for a very simple skirt--elastic waist, ankle-length, free flowing, etc. Do you think a beginner could do this? And if so, do you have a pattern to suggest? If you don't think this is easy enough, what beginner project would you recommend? Thanks for your help, Kelly

A skirt like that would be pretty easy to make. Umm, I made one, so that says a lot. If I was you, I'd just go to your local sewing store and pick out the simplest looking pattern you can find. If you have a Joann's nearby, they are having a 99 cent sale on two of their pattern brands (maybe mccalls and butterick?) toward the end of the month. Patterns can get pretty expensive so I usually stock up at the 99 cent sales. (Also, get yourself on the joann's mailing list while you're there b/c they have a lot of sales and good coupons. I'm not a sale or coupon person, except when it comes to joann's.)

If you are buying fabric for your skirt, definately ask someone at the store to point you in the direction of the easy-to-use fabrics. I made my first skirt out of a crepe fabric that was a huge pita to work with.

Thanks, rubidoux, for your encouragement and suggestions. I don't have a JoAnn's nearby, but I'll check on their website and at the local fabric store for an easy pattern. Even if it doesn't turn out, it'll be good practice.

Do you have a Wal-Mart? Even the smallest one I have been in has a small craft section that normally carries some patterns. It may not be $.99 but you get to look at them. Also, all the major pattern companies: Vogue, Butterick, McCalls, Simplicity, have websites that you can purchase patterns from. There are also others if they do not have what you wish. You may want to google clothes+patterns or skirt+patterns.
