I'm new here so I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the proper forum. I have some questions about antibiotics.
I'll start by giving a little history of our family situation. My daughter is 3. She was exclusively breastfed until 8 months at which time we started solids. She self-weaned at around 15 months. At 18 months she started having chronic ear infections. We have an excellent ped who does not push antibiotics and takes a very cautious approach to dishing out meds etc. We went through allergy testing etc. We discovered she is allergic to dogs, cats and has a mild dairy allergy. She eats cheese, yogurt etc with no problems but has a problem with cows milk. We began giving her soy milk at around 22 months. She had 18 ear infections in a 9 month period. I can't quite recall how many were treated with antibiotics and how many weren't. I think it was about 1/2 and 1/2. When she was 26 months old she had tubes put into her ears and a adnoidectomy done. 6 months later she began having chronic strep throat infections. Again, some were treated with antibiotics and some were not. She had strep 10 times in 6 month period. There were times where I was certain she had it and let her fight it off on her own. A week ago she had a tonsilectomy and a second set of tubes done. As a result of all of this she had chronic yeast infection diaper rashes.
Here are my questions. I am already doing acidopholous and we are about to begin floragen and FOS supplements. What I'd like to know is what can I do to rebuild her immune system from all of the abuse it has taken? I feel like I have done her a extreme disservice with all of the medications and surgeries. I didn't listen to my gut as much as I should have and I hope I am not too late to repair the damage that's been done. Ever since her tonsilectomy last week I've been feeling like we've done her more harm than good and questioning those decisions.
I have been thinking about all of the times she's had tylenol or motrin and I wonder what that has done to her little system. I reviewed her medical records and she's so far had zithromax, augmenton, and amoxicillan.
I am looking for any information anyone can give me about alternative approaches to these meds, rebuilding her immune system, and am sincerely hoping that I am better late than never in reviewing this approach.
I will also add that we have selectively vaccinated and that it she has never received more than one shot at a time and not shot within 3 months of each other. We also co-sleep.
She has a fairly wide and varied diet. She is a good eater. She enjoys fruits and whole grains. I have to push the veggies but she'll eat them with encouragement. Her protein sources are typically organic peanut butter, eggs, cheese, and occasionally chicken and ham. She drinks water or soy milk and only rarely has juice. Mostly if I've made popsicles out of juice and fruit.
Thanks in advance for any advice anyone can share.
