Could you just fold the top part down instead of having to rip some of it out?
I've never made longies from this pattern, so I have no idea what I'm talking about. :LOL

Do a set-up stitch to get your yarn up to the top. Through the bottom as if to purl then through the top as if to knit and you'll be in place.
