kool aid vs. food colouring for wool

I've used both (only used food colouring once, though) and I'm trying to figure out which is better. I thought food colouring would be cheaper, but it sure takes a lot to get enough colour on the yarn. I'm also not crazy about using so much vinegar (I have found that the kool aid is acidic enough to set the dye without using vinegar). On the other hand, I can't find as many different colours in kool aid, and I think it's easier to mix colours with the food dye. Anyone have any thoughts? I suppose I could just use both, whichever was better for a given situation. I have only been able to find the little teeny squeeze bottles that come four in a little cardboard box for the food colouring.

I think these are the most cost effective food coloring dyes for wool and silk:Wilton cake decorating colors

I have no idea if they are available in Canada but the manufacturer website should give you a starting point. There are other manufacturers as well, but these are available in crafts stores near me so I use them. Actually, marthasterwart.com should have them, I am going to go look she has such pretty colors.

These are very concentrated colors and have a good color selection already mixed for you. You will still need vinegar.

I saw something similar at the store where I bought the food colouring, but the first ingredient was sugar. I was worried it would make my wool all sticky. This website says theirs is a gel, though, and IIRC the colouring I saw was a paste. I'll give it a try. Worst case scenario, I have to make icing to use up the colouruing

Thanks!

You know, my wilton's does say sugar. It must be so little that it washes out when you rinse. Good luck!
