Ear Cone/Candle- tried it? - Page 2

Well, the response about the ear candles not working made me recall a "nice" converstaion I had with a dentist aquaintance. he claimed that mercury poisoning was impossible from fillings because a number of studdies had been performed on dentists. He wouldn't even consider that dentists wear protective "gear" and that a filing is in an open mouths for years upon years.
As for the candling, I have never had it done but would like to some time. I believe it is the Chinese who have been doing ear cleaning things for thousands of years.
I was a total skeptic about natural remedies until I visited a kinesiologist. He cleared up in 5 minutes what traditional medicine couldn't help me with for 4 years (I have Candida). And you're all right - to each his own!

This is pretty much T but Quackwatch is really Steven Barret, M.D. Barrett is non-practicing psychiatrist in Allentown, Pennsylvania, who apparently works out of his basement. According to this page,
Quote:
Little is known about the NCAHF. Nick-naming itself "The Quackbusters," it's membership is secret, and it's funding is (?). But leaders in the "Alternative Medicine" movement have long recognized that to be listed as a "quack" on the Barrett, Jarvis, Herbert, Renner "hit list" is tantamount to having "arrived" in the health world.
Quote:
There are 52 double doctorates on the list, with two or more of the following degrees, MD, PhD, DO, DDS, DVM, DMD. Many have university affiliation, have published in the peer-review literature, and are respected authors of books or even textbooks. Please note that this 'quack' list includes Linus Pauling, PhD.

I don't think I take Quackwatch very seriously, no. :LOL

i get major earwax buildup, and candled for several years and really found it helpful. then one day i got skeptical and it stopped working for me.

now i try to soften the wax and hose it out with a bulb syringe. this is nice because i don't need dh's help and he thought the whole ear candle thing was quackery. if you do a google search you can find lots of sources for ear candles.

Quack watch is a quack.
They even discredit Colloidal Silver, which is used in burn units and is now being put into bandages as well.
They also discredit organic foods, reflexology, acupuncture, feingold diet, herbal usage, chiropractic care, amalgam in fillings, detoxing, homeopathy, massage therapy, naturopathy, and vitamin. C. and :

We ear candle!!! I learned from our dear chiropractor Dr. Lisa how to do it. We have done it for YEARS. Tonight we went to an auction and I bought fifty ear candles for three dollars. The auctioneer didn't know what they were and called them pea shooters. He threw a bunch of other pipe and stuff in with them because he thought they wouldn't sell. Then, on my way out of the auction, a guy offered me ten dollars for the pipe. So, I ended up making seven dollars and I got enough ear candles to do our entire family. Six of us candle, times two or three ear candles for each ear for a session. Fifty will about do it. I am so excited!!!!!

We candle DH's ears periodically. He has ridiculous ear wax and this really seems to offer him relief. He says he definitely feels and hears better after it has been done.

One of my best friends has her Masters in Audiology and thinks we're a bit whacked for doing it, but DH says it works for him...

I've never used the ear candle, but with the comment on smoke just wanted to add that I remember when we were kids our mom would have someone blow smoke in our ears (Yuck! I know!) when we had earaches and it seemed to help.

We usually use a dose of peroxide to help with any build up and it loosens it right up.

We use a dose of peroxide the day before we candle (or sometimes a couple hours before). This loosens up the wax so more comes out when we candle. Also, when doing 2 or 3 candles in succession, the wax is heated from the previous candle so more wax will come out. You can tell if the person has a candida yeast problem if a bunch of powdery substance clogs up the candle. This happens when candling my mom usually, I have to clean out the bottom of the candle every 2 minutes with a toothpick. It will be interesting to see if anything has changed with her yeast problem since she has been on the Southbeach diet.

burned the carpet

I bought ear candles years ago and tried it later on DH who had an ear ache. Not only did he not get any relief but despite the aluminum collar I put around the candle, it burned the back of his neck and put a hole in the carpet! He threw the other candle away himself and we haven't tried it again. I'd still like to know if they work and how.

I have a fabulous book on ear candling. It is called "Ear Candling", by Anne Tatum. She offers the book, supplies, and a candling correspondence course through this phone number 1 (800) 309-3277. After candling for years, she put into words and pictures what I already knew, and the book contained a lot of valuable information that I didn't know. The book is useful for just doing your family even though it is geared to the professional ear candler.

We have never had a burned carpet, we don't use aluminum foil collars, we use paper plates with a hole cut in the side/middle for the candle to fit through. We always have a damp cloth and a cup of water nearby, as well as scissors, q-tips, toothpicks, fire starter, ziplock baggies (for the used candle and debris). We have never set anyone on fire, but I did use four candles on one of my Mom's ears once and the heat irritated her ear. I think Anne Tatum's book says never to use more than three candles in one candling session. In the case where someone needs more candling, you spread it out over days or a week. I didn't get the book until after quite a few years of trial and error. The one tool I wish I owned that she sells is a tiny candle snuffer. I would definately get one of those when you order, they would be invaluable. She also sells fire retardant capes for the person being candled to wear. Would it be weird for me to ask dh for a tiny ear candle snuffer for Christmas???

Whole Foods wont carry them, i think because people abuse them, (your ear needs some wax) but a natural food store would have them. I LOVE them
my mom had a really bad oozing ear infection once, we waited for it to heal and a couple of months later did the candles and an amazing amount of stuff came out and she could hear again. have someone else do them, sit back and meditate, they are great, i think i'll go get some now!!!

Wild Oats in KC carries them. I think that Whole Foods in KC carries them too. Almost every health food store in the area around here carries them, even the tiny ones. We must have an over abundance of wax around here. We usually only ear candle once or twice a year, unless someone has a specific request for an ear ache or clogged ears.

I may try to candle our miniature schnauser if we have leftover candles. I know he has a ton of wax. I'd try to do the cats too if they'd let me........little people/animals probably only need 1/2 of a candle per ear or one per ear max.

I asked dh for the ear candle snuffer since the topic of what we wanted for Christmas came up. He said absolutely not, it was the most ridiculous gadget he had ever heard of since I bought my neti pot. Hey, I take offence to that! He said, "If you want to put a candle out, dip it in the water, shake it, or stomp on it". Several problems dh fails to realize. If you dip it in water, say to stop if you get interupted, it makes it harder to relight later. If you shake it, burning embers float everywhere, possible fire hazard. If you stomp on it, why then the candle would smash. Can't anyone see my love of gadgets has a purpose? I am forever misunderstood.

I used to ear candle. Then my aunt accidentally set my hair on fire while we were doing it. It might have been the technique, but I've sworn off burning objects in my ears ever since!

Itching like mad!

I ear candled a couple of weeks ago, and starting 2 days ago, my ear canals have been itching like mad! I talked to a nurse friend of mine, and she said they looked red and clean. She thinks that maybe my ears weren't too waxy and the candles overdried them. She ear candles too. So, I'm going to have my dh put some olive oil in my ears tonight. I'll let you know how it goes.
