Merino pilling and sweater shaver question

Thread Starter
I just finished knitting my second pair of soaker pants for my daughter with merino wool yarn from handpaintedyarn.com and I've noticed that once my daughter starts wearing them they pill up like crazy. The pills are so huge there is no way my little battery powered sweater shaver from Walmart(they don't have the plug-in kind...) is going to do anything. So the only thing I can think to do is pull the pills off by hand, which is tedious and time-consuming, considering I might have to do this every week...

So my question is, what can I do about the pills? And for my next project where else can I get yummy soft yarn that might not pill so much? I went with merino because its sooo soft, but are there other yarns as soft or maybe other merinos that don't pill as much? Tia

Hmmm...with merino you trade durability for softness. It will pill, but will eventually stop. I usually just pick them off by hand. You might look into a merino blend yarn for your next project, you get the softness of merino, but the added durability of types of wool.

Jess, can you elaborate on merino blends? What's a good ratio?
