So I've been using cloth as toilet paper for 2 months now..

and it's been GREAT! There was a thread about using cloth as toilet paper a while back and decided to try it because dd (age 4) was always red and irritated, and always had nasty white stuff in the folds of her skin 'down there'. Plus I was always getting irritated too. I've tried all sorts of tp brands, all the same. And I hate how it dissolves in your hands and wiping your butt leaves little bits of paper and blah!

So anyway, I started buying cloth wipes from WAHM business advertised here, 10-15 at a time. I finally have my stash built up to almost 100 cloth wipes. I have them divided up into 3 stacks for each bathroom in the house. And next to each toilet I have just a regular plastic bucket to hold the used wipes.

I told dd that we are going to use cloth wipes, she adjusted very fast and she said she loves using them. I taught her to "tap tap tap" instead of wipe and that's helped also. She hasn't had any irritation at all since we switched to cloth. And she's only dropped the wipe in the toilet once. I told her the first day we used them that if she drops one in the toilet I'm not going to be mad and to let me know so I can fish it out, and not to flush it. And that's what she has done! One time I forgot to put the bucket back, and i hear her yelling "mama where's the bucket???".

To wash, I just dump each bucket into the laundry basket and wash them with our clothes. I mean it's not like we are wiping big chunks of poo off our butts, no different then undies with track marks in them After they are done drying, she loves "helping" me by fishing out all the butt wipes from the rest of the laundry and putting them in stacks.

I do have toilet paper in each bathroom still, but I haven't had to buy any since we started which is nice. I need to get more wipes since the baby will be born soon (I Hope!!!!!) and will use cloth wipes on him too.

So if you were considering it, it can be done and it's not gross and it's so much more healthier then that paper stuff on a roll

That's what I keep on telling DH. I use cloth for me as well as the kids... He's the only "holdout" :LOL

Oh, I am envious. I can't get anyone in my house to even consider using cloth, let alone actually give it a try. I use cloth pads, ds uses cloth diapers...what is the difference. Dh is constantly getting grossed out by ds's poop though, he is such a drama queen.

Awesome! I started making some wipes, but haven't made the switch yet.

Maybe I should just break down and buy some wipes. Any brands you'd recommend?

You've inspired me!

My dd has the same problem with getting the tp stuck in the the folds down there. And she always uses way too much.

I think dh will be hard to convince too, but I'll see!

I have toilet paper in the bathrooms for dh and any guest, but i think dh poo's at work so I don't think he uses either cloth or paper at home. (I'm sure he'd love me for telling everyone that) I'm not concerned if he uses the cloth or not, I'm just glad dd and I do.

The wipes I've been buying have been from www.nopins4baby.com because she's here in Nashville and anything she ships gets here the next day, and Dina is wonderful I've been buying the wipes that are 15 for $10.95. I like them because they are thin, we don't need a double sided butt wipe for us

Now for the baby I will get double sided wipes because there's more cleaning involved with a baby and thicker wipes with terry on one side and something soft on the other will be great.

intrigued by the idea...makes sense, i use cloth for ds, so why not for me? so, just a question, do you soak them in anything while they are waiting to be washed od is your "bucket" dry?

i suppose i could just throw mine in the wash with ds's diapers and wipes. hmmm....

Nope, just toss them in a bucket, wash them with the rest of our laundry, which I do every few days.

Man! I *really* want to do this but dh thinks it is gross (which is a shame because he regularly has to plunge because he uses so much tp, which I think is gross). But his main reason (and why I haven't tried it myself) is because we have maids for the B&B but who also do our laundry (I know, I'm spoiled!). When I was cloth diapering I just did all that laundry myself but dh thinks it will gross the maids out too much just *knowing* that we are using cloth for our own butts. I think cloth would make total sense (for the environment, for the lame mexican water treatment, for our skin, for our budget) but I am sort of stuck on the idea that our wonderful maids who I adore will think I am the skankiest person in the world. How do I work this out? Is there a way to tell them not to bother with that basket without letting on what's in it? Is there a way to make it sound cool and hip?

If anyone has ideas (loftmama? you there?) PLEASE let me know!

Plady,
could you just move "that bucket" before the maids come?

i just logged on to ask if anyone is doing this- i never thought of it until reading about it on doodlebottoms... my husband will never ever go for it- he doesn't even want to touch the inserts most of the time, and won't seperate for the wash. i am leaning towards trying this, but i have to admit, i am not thrilled about it, but less paper and more money sounds so great!

Aren't you worried about germs and poo getting on your other stuff?

ooh, I may try this. DH only uses "wet wipes" for his booty anyway.

cool

I used cloth wipes when I was postpartum w/ DC2, and it was so much more comfy! It really hurt to wipe w/ toilet paper--blotting is more comfy and absorbent, esp after constantly spraying w/ the peri bottle. so anyway, I use cloth wipes for dd, but haven't seriously considered it for the rest of us.....I think when I start my period again (hope I'm not jinx-ing myself!), I'll be experimenting w/ cloth and all. After getting essentially diaper rash from disposable pads postpartum, I'm never going back! Used cloth for "that" too, and was SOOO much better!

Anyway, Plady, I love that you are in Mexico right now, I just think that's so interesting that we can be all over the world and still connect w/ our MDC community. But anyway, I second the idea to hide the buckets w/ the maids come! That is very considerate of you to be sensitive to their feelings about this. ITA w/ your dh. I'd be grossed out to deal w/ other people's poo too!

BTW I just use cheap 15 for $5 wipes from walmart, and they work fine! I guess there are softer things out there, but I'm happy.

I'm thinking about doing this. DH is intrigued b/c we would really be making the switch because he has some irritation from TP. But he thinks it is kind of gross. That is really odd since he is the one who spent years trying to convince me that cloth diapers are better than disposibles. I'm so tempted to just get a small quantity of cloth and just try it out.

I do the same. It's pretty discreet.

I'm realy interestd in trying cloth instead of tp but

was wondering if it gets stinky in the pale while waiting to be washed? Just wondering how you deal wtih it and what's that really like. Thanks.

dogmommie - my dh has the same concern. I'm having a hard time convincing him - which surprises me b/c he's always complaining that we use too much t.p. I told him dd and I will do it anyway, he doesn't have too.

My sister is visiting and brought her serger, so I will make wipes this week!!

bs"d

I haven't found stink to be an issue. Just as with cloth diapers, the container can be closed to minimize any smell, but I haven't found that there is a smell. With cloth diapers, frequently the cloth is saturated with urine and poo. With cloth wipes, it's just a little smear of poo or urine on the fabric. You will probably be washing them less often than you would cloth diapers (unless you are also washing diapers and can toss the wipes in the washing with them), but that small amount of bodily waste hasn't created any stink at my house.
