Bates Method/Natural Eyesight? - Page 2

I talked to my dr about the method abimommy is talking about and he thought it was a great alternative. I plan on trying it someday. As someone who has worn glasses since I was 5 and contacts since 12, I can't imagine going all day long without either. What freedom!

I got a "homework assignment" like Liliana a few years ago and did the exercises religiously for a few months. I did notice that my eyes were much less tired at the end of the day and my vision better, though I was nowhere near being able to go without glasses or contacts.

My mom had Lasik surgery, and now her pupils reflect light in a strange way. Makes me think of a fish (poor Mom). I don't like the feeling of looking into her eyes now and seeing them shine like that. That is the only reason I wouldn't do it--what a freak, huh?

Good for you, mountain mom! Do you have any more specific information about your retraining method? I would love to give my eyes a break.

a good friend of mine did this and it has worked wonders for her! her eyesight has improved so much that she doesn't need to get glasses now

I'm glad I found this thread. I have poor eyesight (myopic) and woiuld LOVE to be free of contacts/glasses. I did some looking around on the Bates link that was posted, and it said that you would have to go without glasses completely for the method to work, and if you couldn't function without aid, your eyes were probably too far gone. That would be me -- even if it's almost too dark to see, I feel like I need my glasses. I would much rather have to function in the dark than without glasses (but then, I have good night vision). So my question is, those who are doing/have done the exercises, did you still wear glasses at other times? Did you get a book that described the exercises?

mountain mom, what kind of nutrients did you make sure you had? I would love to hear more about what you did.

Hi everyone, Hi Brisen...long time no 'see'!

Anyway this is what I did as far as exercises. I have to mention that I think the reason I have been successful is that my prescription is mild and the astingmatism was also mild. As well, my sight had not deterioated in a long time, my prescription had stayed consistent for many years.

The exercises were really easy. Twice a day I would go without my glasses. At first I would do this at home, in a safe, familiar environment. I started with half hour and increased to about two hours a session over the course of about four weeks. Then I did the sessions for about 8 months consistently. Now I go without my glasses about 3 hours aday, usually at home or when I am gardening or exercising at the gym.

As far as the nutrients, I concentrate on healthy essential fatty acid intake and absorbtion. Focusing on liver function to ensure proper fat emulisfication. Using different herbs to stimulate digestion and bile flow in order to appropriately digest and absorb the E.F.A's. I also increased my vitamin A/Beta Carotene intake by juicing and eating more raw foods as well as sprouting and dehydrating. Lastly I incorportated more antioxidant rich foods such as blueberries, asparagus, wheatgerm, oat and ricebran.

I also made sure that I rested my eyes after doing strenous tasks such as knitting, sewing, computers and reading.

The final thing I did was an eyerinse with herbs and a green myrtle hydrosol eyespray. I stopped using anything chemical based in my eyes such as contact solutions, over the counter eyedrops and different mascaras. Now I use a henna based mascara that is more natural based and dyes the lashes slowly over time.

Thanks for the details!

Are there exercises that you do without your glasses -- I read a bit at the Bates website about using a chart like the opt. does to check your sight. Is it important to have one or two long stretches without your glasses? I was thinking if I had a chain to keep my glasses on, I could take them off any time during the day when I felt comfortable that way. But it would be a bunch of short times.

As for resting your eyes after knitting etc. -- do you look at something far away? Close your eyes? Take off your glasses?

I hadn't really thought about the chemicals I use in my eyes. I was given eye drops *a lot* when I was young because of hayfever. I like contacts because I can see better with them, they don't get smudges, I don't worry about them falling off, etc., but I do find that they make my eyes dry and itchy very easily.

Thanks for the advice!
