Girl's name - Anya, Anja, Aine

OK, so we're getting really close (edd wise). Aine has always been one of our girls names, but i seem to be seeing it every where lately and don't want to choose one of those names that's about to explode. (I mean I had about 4 Jennifers out of every 10 girls in my class in school. Trying to avoid that.)So how many are considering Anya, Anja, Aine, etc? How many know someone who's used it lately?

Thanks

i've been watching lots of buffy lately, so i've seen more anya than i have the others, albeit fictionally

i've never even heard the name aine before--i like it a lot! the only problem i can foresee is teachers mispronouncing it, but i'd take that over being one of four jennifers everywhere i go any day.

I really love this name! I don't know anyone who has used it lately, and I doubt we will. I did have a classmate whose name was Anya. My favorite spelling is Anja, with Aine a close second.

I replied in the other post. We are going to call our daughter Anya because we really love the name. I have never known anyone with that name, but that might not be relevent to you as I am in Australia and obviously different names are popular. I've also been watching Buffy and Anya is my favourite character, so I hope people don't thing we named our daughter after her! We just like the name.
We are using Sage for the middle name, which I have noticed is becoming quite popular for boys and girls. It's the name she wants though

Well we were going to name the baby Áine but when I saw how many people were choosing the name or variations of it we changed our minds (I was always one Stephanie in the herd and it really bothered me).

It is a really beautiful name though!

See that's what I've been thinking. It's been one of our 2 girls names since we had our first 4 years ago (we've had towo boys). Now it seems like I see it on the boards all the time for a name people are considering but hardly anyone is saying they're going to use it. Where have you seen a lot of people choosing it? We're having trouble with the Irish girls names and I'm 39 weeks (our other name the last 4 years was Fiona - Shrek sort of wiped that out, can't have her called princess )

Oh too funny LOL...Fiona was on our top four list too and we decided against it because of the shrek thing! I guess we have similar taste in names LOL!

I haven't actually met too many Áine in real life that are little so it might be all right. I just keep hearing it on boards and it was a red flag for me because I try to stay away from popular names (okay I obviously failed miserably with Rhys since I am hearing it more and more often...even with the original welsh spelling LMAO...but that was our intention!)

According to the social register Anya (just that spelling) was #486 in popularity for 2002 and 2003. I would be willing to bet it is higher now then it was then but I think it is relative...I would still say it is out of the top 300 or so and that might be just enough popularity to keep it from being weird KWIM??

To compare...the name Declan is apparently #443 in 2002 and #425 in 2003...so how often does that pose a problem for you?...Reese on the other hand was 374 for 2003 and the spelling Reece was #363 (Rhys wasn't listed in the top 1000 but the combined affect of the other two spellings means it is WAY more popular than Declan by a long shot LMAO!)

I think if you love it though you should go with it because I don't think it will be popular in the way that Brianna or Emily is popular YK? Plus it is a beautiful name!

y'know, we're having this problem with the names we like, too--i'm a jennifer, so i really really want to avoid having my child go through life with the same first name as a lot of other people they'll encounter, but on the other hand, i feel like we have to go with what resonates. so, if this child is a girl, she will probably be hazel, even though one of the other couples in our childbirth class already named their girl hazel. (of course, she could arrive seeming very un-hazel-like, and i'm open to that possibility, too). we're trying to stay generally below the ssa 500s, which will hopefully make it okay.

finally, it seems to me that there are way more names in our cultural "pool" than there used to be, so it seems less likely that a few names will take up the bulk of the population. i think you should go with aine if you like it.

okay thassall! good luck--naming is hard. i'm still really undecided on a lot of naming details. not to mention the rest of parenting...

Sorry it has taken me so long to respond. Just wanted to pop back over and say thanks for the replies. She was born 10/28 - so it really was close to still be thinking about names. After all the thinking about Aine . . . we went with Bronwen! Thanks again everyone.

Congratulations! Bronwen is a lovely name!
I told my 3 year old that our baby would be called Anya and he has been calling it "Baby Onion"

Anye was dh's and my top pick...until yesterday when he said, "I can't stop thinking about gross HS boys saying, 'I just wanna get On-yuh.'" So now he won't even hear of it...we're back to Alia. Time is getting short, LOL!

I had a dream that this baby was a girl and we named her Anya. But the name is too similar to my other children's names so I won't be using it. I probably dreamed of it because I have a relative named Mania (sounds like Anya with an M in the beginning) but don't feel that I can use that name since everyone will think mayneeuh instead. I love the name. Are you saying it "Anne"ya or "Ahn"ya? I say the 2nd way.

The 2nd way - ON-yuh.
But to me, Ahn-ya and On-ya sound different.
We are saying it Ahn-ya.

My son is called Dante (Dahn-tay) but lots of people pronounce it Don-tay, which I don't like. I imagine I'll have the same problem with Anya.

LOL - to me it's the same! But I do understand: I'm originally from Canada and pronounce my name MEH-gihn and most people down here call me MAY-gun...subtle, but definitely different to me.
