Hey, my cat had a c-section and spay at the same time, and vet said she wouldn't be able to nurse. For the first two days we had to do round-the-clock kitten formula. Mama cat wanted nothing to to with the kittens. It was so sad to hear the kittens' little cries! Finally, on the second night, I tried for the millionth time to bring one kitten to mama, and right away she started nursing like crazy. Mama cat started licking the kitten, and after that we had a happy, nursing family of five. The first kitten kept nursing until she was 6 months old, almost the same size as her mom! Now that I'm nursing too, I feel a special connection with mama cat. I think she feels it too, haha!

BTW, the vet also said after 6 weeks that the kittens were just nursing for comfort and I should start them on cat food. Whatever! She sounded like a bad ped!

Congrats to the cat
My parents' cat nursed her one remaining "toddler" along with her new babies a few months ago, and we had two nursing toddlers in the family. Sara and Taz are still bosom buddies.

We got a kitten and my first cat started nursing her (they weren't related)! It was so cute. The kitten nursed so much that my cat relactated. Isn't that great? I think the kitten must have been weaned too early.

I saw a cat nursing her kittens today and was saying to Jocelyn look they eat the nummies from their mommy just like you. She was very excited to see the kittens.

We had a female cat for the past 2 years, a stray that we kept (but we just gave her to farm neighbors, we couldn't keep her).

She had 2 batches of kittens. I really felt bonded to her when she was nursing them. I think people could learn alot about nursing by watching a mother cat. The first 3 days, she only left the box to eat or pee (I could relate to that, but for us humans that period is weeks!) Then later she'd eat, and take a break outside the box, until a kitten cried, then she'd rush back. Eventually she ventured outside for walks, and by the time her kittens were almost "teenagers", I swear she stayed away, just to help them along with weaning! (They nursed for at least 4-5 months, I let them wean naturally, and she had LAM, and didn't have a second "autumn" batch of kittens, that most cats do!).

She also nursed a stray "teenager" kitten last fall (he was completely wild) along with her own "teenager" kitten.

And this spring, her own kittens were killed by a tom (they do that), and I went to a neighbor's farm, and picked up 3 kittens there, that were being hand raised for the past week since their mom was run over.

I stuck the kittens in the box with her (they were a few weeks older than her own were), closed the box, and an hour later they were nursing - one big happy family! I knew she'd take them.

Also, I'm surprised by how many neighbor children didn't know what she was doing, when she was nursing her kittens.

I've never heard of a cat getting a c-section before.

I love these stories! So sweet!

When my cat Lina had a kitten she totally ignored it (never found out if it was a boy or girl and she only had one). She never stayed in the box with it and rarely nursed it and we couldn't afford to get kitten formula. She kept on moving it to different parts of the house and one time left it underneath a blanket in the living room and someone stepped on it! We didn't find the kitten for a while. By the time I found it it was already cold and close to death. That poor kitten!! My Lina is a bad mother.

But she lives with me and dp now and doesn't have the chance to get pregnant again.
