Ok...vent over..

Meg! I am so sorry you are sick! How miserable. Stay in bed as much as you can, okay? Have you tried that Echinacea throat coat tea? It really helped me when I was sick while pregnant. It tastes yummy and is very soothing. I hope you feel better soon, and then you can have your bundle of joy!

funny you should mention that stuff..I've been living on that and Emergen-C and Chicken soup...thank heavens it's the weekend finally so I can be a bed hog...you'll find out soon enough, Monica..mommies aren't really ever sick

I guess Elijah wouldn't go for a day in bed, would he? My SO feels like he is coming down with something - he's got a sore throat. I'm praying that baby and I don't get it. I'm just thinking healthy thoughts and trying to take good care of us. The thought of my one week old baby being sick scares the crap out of me! EEK!

hmm..well, breastmilk/colostrum more than likely will protect the baby at this age Tell hubby to wash up before he holds her while he feels icky, though!! I hope you stay healthy..because this cold really sucks! Elijah is still nursing and it's only colostrum now, and thankfully he is not sick (knocking on wood)..never underestimate the power of breastmilk

I'm fighting an icky cold too. And my mw isn't on call this weekend. It's the doctor, who is hardly ever on call, and who I really don't know, so hoping baby doesn't come until at least Monday. And dd is feeling icky, so I'm pretty tired, b/c she hasn't been sleeping well. I don't think I could deal with labor or with a newborn right now.

On the castor oil issue, I tried it with my first, b/c I was past my due date by a week, and my family from out of state were getting ready to go back home. My mw wouldn't induce with medicine until I had tried castor oil. It's really quite awful and I don't think I could stomach it again, even though she told me it's okay if I want to. It made me pretty miserable for several hours and then I never did go into labor. I just had prodromal labor which fizzled out after awhile. It works for some people, but I just don't think I could even stomach it again. The taste and smell is just awful!

Yep I've got that cold too, and am pretty glad baby doesn't seem ready to come out yet. Can't imagine pushing and sneezing
On the natural induction thing. I tried castor oil with my dd when I was over due, I didn't work for me. This time, if I feel the need to, I think I will try homeopathic instead. Not that the castor oil was sooo terrible for me but it wasn't a picnic either.

I don't think I'll be trying the castor oil...I never do very well with taking things, especially if they taste bad. Sooner or later this babe has to come out, right?

DS is symptomatic...threw up in the bed last night. FUN! The poor little guy. He refuses to blow his nose, so if he gets the least bit runny, it turns into a cough/throw-up thing. Other than that, he is the healthiest kid I know (yeah for chiropractic, breastfeeding, no vax, etc.). Anyway, I hope that he feels better before I have the baby. DH slept in his room most of the night and we can lay low today. However, our neighborhood camp-out is tonight and he's been looking forward to it since last year. It's going to be in the 40's, but if he feels OK, they'll go. It's just down the street, so they can always come home in the middle of the night if it is miserable. Of course, the marshmellows won't help (we don't usually do much sugar, especially when symptomatic). I just want him to get better quickly so I can have the baby. As if the baby knows and will wait until big brother is feeling 100%!

Hmm..maybe that is it..the baby knows it's not the right time yet! I hope Grant feels better soon...Jake was completely like that, he had vax, but he was BF and had Chiro since before birth and he was the healthiest little kid ever..never got sick until he started school in kindergarten and even then, only the occasional cold. I may homeschool Elijah, but thankfully HE is not getting whatever horrible thing this is that I've got!

Off to take my Emergen-C...the upside of it is...it will probably keep my water from bursting first...

I know you have had tons of advice about things that are safe to take during a cold but if all else fails, try Sambucol for Kids. There is a grown-up version too but I take the kids stuff when I am pregnant. You can get it at most natural food stores and I swear by the stuff for keeping the girls healthy. We are constantly battling colds and the like because of school. At the first sign of a sniffle, they get acidophilus, Sambucol and my homemade chest rub. It seems to work.

My mw says that if you aren't ready for the baby psychologically (i.e. you're not feeling well, someone is on call besides your dr/mw, etc.) that you won't go into labor. She says you will only go into labor naturally if you are okay with it mentally but not too stressed about wanting the baby to come. Like when people put pressure on you to perform, you can't. My first time, I felt very pressured to give birth by a certain date, and of course I didn't. Who knows what will happen this time. I'm resisting the urge to get the house too clean though, 'cuz I'm sure if it's totally clean, the baby won't come. LOL! Anyway, I'm sure this isn't totally true in all cases, but I bet most of the babies aren't going to come until all of us sick mamas are over our colds. I'm actually feeling pretty good today. It's just at night that I feel rough, but I also haven't been getting nearly enough sleep, and I finally got a good nights sleep last night.

Alisha,
That is what my midwife says too, she thinks that a lot of mine has to do with being nervous about ds and how he is going to react. For example, last night I was having good strong contractions that hurt and then they were getting to be about seven minutes apart but then ds woke up and was upset and crying for me and they slowed down. The kids are all going to my sisters tonight and we are going to have a glass of wine, a massage and maybe even sex to see if that doesn't help things along.

It is really easy. I take about heat about 1/2 cup of olive oil and melt a couple of ounces of beeswax in it. You can even get natural beeswax at Michaels. Then put essential oils in it, after you take it off the heat. I use eucalyptus, teatree oil, rosemary and peppermint. Just be careful to only use a couple of drops of the mint if you are going to use it on little ones. It smells a little like Vicks without any weird chemicals or petroleum products.

Sorry to hear you guys are sick. Hope you feel better soon!

If this baby isn't going to come until I stop stressing about it coming, I will be pregnant forever. Well, yesterday I started having diarreah (I know, tmi) around 2pm and contractions around 5:30. They were 10 mins apart. By 10:00 they were 2 mins apart and pretty painful. I got in the tub and tried to relax. We called the midwife at midnight- ctx still between 2 and 5 mins apart. Then I tried to go to sleep and I slept in between ctx all night long. They remained 5 mins apart (I woke up every so often to time them again). Sounds good, right? Well, I'm still freakin' pregnant! The contractions have gotten much less intense and are farther apart. My body is playing a cruel joke on me, I swear! That was a pretty convincing non-labor... I am going to be pregnant for the rest of my life.

On the upside, my midwife thinks I'll rest today and have the baby tonight. But she's probably just trying to make me feel better. How am I ever going to be sure I'm really in labor?? I just can't trust my body. Oh well... I'll post in "the circle of light" when the baby's head crowns! :LOL

Hope everyone has a good day!

I said about the same thing to dh last night. I am so tired of the false labor. I am going to go outside and rake leaves this afternoon.

Steph - what's in the Sambucol? I haven't heard of that one. I'll have to look for it at Wild Oats the next time I'm there.

Thanks for posting your chest rub recipe! I'm going to have to try that!

My SO is definitely sick. I'm trying to take care of him as much as he'll let me. He just gets REALLY quiet when he's sick (and he's a pretty quiet guy anyway). He couldn't sleep last night, so he ended up spending half the night on the couch. I was secretly a little glad, because that meant I could get baby out of her cradle (next to the bed) and have her in bed with me.

Here's a cosleeping question: We've been cosleeping with baby between us so she can't accidentally fall off the bed or anything. It is working wonderfully, but with the arrangement that way my SO and I can't cuddle. I can't handle that! Cuddling is life blood to me. How do we work around that??

Monica,
When dd was really tiny, I often slept with her on my side and me in the middle, primarily b/c dh was terrified of rolling onto her. It worked out just fine since I had super mothering instinct going on and she didn't move around much (she didn't roll over for the first time until she was 5 months.)

Ditto, I have been in the middle since ds was born. Anyone have any great ideas about juggling four. We are thinking mom and dad in the middle and the kids on the outside.

The Sambucol has elderberry, echinacea and propolis. There is no Goldenseal in it which I like because they say not to take that when you are pregnant. I have heard it starts contractions. Wait a minute.... I don't really care about that at this point, do I?

Oh well it works really well for the kids.

Hope everyone feels better soon, healthy and strong so they can birth their babies.

Things here are good. I'm a compulsive planner, and this time around I decided to just keep planning things and when the baby decides it's show time I'll cancel accordingly. When I was pregnant with Nola, I emptied my calendar 2 weeks before my due date just in case. Well that decision cost me (and my poor husband) my mental health. I'm really fortunate to have incredibly easy pregnancies physically but after 5 weeks of nothingness, emotionally I was a mess. Having too much to do is fantastic in comparison.

It sounds silly but finally I feel like I'm having a fall baby. Growing up in the North East, I've been really thrown by the unseasonably warm temps here in metro Atlanta. Maybe my body didn't believe it was autumn either

Take Care
