So far away
I feel your pain. For 3 years dh was stationed at a LORAN (Long Range Aids to Navigation-shipes used to use this to navigate, some airlines do, but mostly it's used to set clocks now) for 3 years. He was gone Mon-Fri. and got home on noon on Friday. He was home Sat. Sun and back to work on Monday. He earned 30 days a year, but he could rarely ever take them as he was the only one in his position at his station, and when he was gone, the work just piled up. It is a hard life. I got involved. I homeschooled my older daughter for one of those years. I had girlfriends who knew how it was. We all were a support network for each other. Trading kids, and getting activities going. The beach, someones front yard, hikes...take at least one day of the week and call it social development and get out! Take them to the grocery store. Have friends over! Have a cooking day and get some other homeschoolers and make a 5 course meal. Make some cassaroles that you can put in the freezer. I just stayed busy. Not so much that I wore myself out, but enough that I didn't get depressed. Find a hobby for yourself. I started taking college courses online. I'm using my GI bill from when I was in the Coast Guard, but you may qualify for some program...you can take one course at a time! I love it! I just moved so I'm finding new people to help out, but I had several girl-friends and we swapped on a regular basis so that we could go on outings. I love my kids, but sometimes I really just wanted to take a walk by the lake all by myself. This only took about 30 minutes but I came back refreshed and a better mama.
We knew it would only be for three years so that really helped. We had some hard times, but it does get better. In the military, you've got to take the crummy jobs to get the good ones. We're going to end up back in California here pretty soon (we're from there, but we don't want to go back we love Alaska and want to raise our kids here and retire and and and..) and we know that will be crummy too. I keep remembering that I will have a degree in 3 years, and my younger dd will be in kindergarten and I will be working while the kids are in school so we have some play money.
My one saving grace now..my dh is still very busy even though he is home every night..is that I can watch Roseanne every night at 10 pm here. I get to watch an hour. It makes my day. I know weird.
Something really funny. We have had dh around every night for at least 4 months. He is driving me crazy! I love him to death and he is an awesome man, but I'm gonna ring his neck. We just found out that he is going to a training the beginning of Dec. and I can't wait. He'll be gone for a week! I'm getting the kids a dog, I'm gonna go get my hair done, I'm gonna redo my younger dd's room..HA! Oh, and finish getting ready for Christmas. I can't do any of that with him in my hair. He will just bug me until I can't see straight.
