We went to see this last night, and ...

DO NOT GO SEE IT!!!

I know a lot of mom's here probably don't do movies anyway, but we really liked the Pixar movies (despite some shortcomings...) in the past and were excited about the new one coming out. The previews that I saw only showed comedy, so I very shocked and disappointed at the level of violence in that movie. It really is not a kids movie, it should have a much harsher rating than PG. I know it means Parental Guidance, but I shouldn't have to explain death over and over to my child.

We left early after it was obvious it wasn't going to get any better.

These were some of the scenes:

Bank robber chase scene with the robber shooting at them with an automatic weapon.

An attempted suicide. A man jumped off a skyscraper and the hero saved him. They could have left it there, but had to describe later that it was a suicide attempt.

That is all I can think of right now. It was just fight scene after fight scene, and they didn't even try to soften it up, when people were dead, they were dead. Dh stayed and watched the entire thing, and thought that it was even disturbing to him.

I had been waiting for any review of this here, thanks. It actually sounds like what have been imagining it to be. We hope to see it for Dd's bday. The stuff you mentioned wouldn't be an issue for our family. I am sorry it wasn't your thing though.

I'd already read about the beginning, where a lot of superheroes get slaughtered or something...

We'll probably still take ds, though. The first 3 Harry Potters didn't scare him, and neither does the LOTR trilogy. We chat with him about fantasy violence, and as the Incredibles are not live action, I think it will fall into the same category for us.

I had heard that some of the action was a bit intense. I see in your sig that your son is under four, so I can see why you were upset. Other Pixar movies have had some minor violence and chase scenes, but nothing like what you describe here.

That said, I'm still planning to take DD to see it tomorrow. She's almost six, though - I don't think I would have taken her to a PG movie at age four or under. You just have to know your own kid.

Sorry you had such a bad experience. I felt the same way when I rented Pocahontas for my DD and an Indian was shot and killed...

Yes, I am sure it depends on each child. Ds is ok, and I am proud of him that he told me he wanted to leave instead of watching, scared. I have made a rule that he can't watch LOTR or Harry Potter until he can read the books.

I still think that I haven't seen this much violence in a kids movie, even a Disney movie. It is also psychologically disturbing in some parts. I am interested in what you guys think of it after you see it though!

We saw this last night and the whole family had a good time. We rarely go to the theater because it is cheaper to rent than pay the tix prices.

We talked about it this morning. It wasn't anymore violent than cartoons are these days. There were a couple of dialogue things that bothered me, but ds didn't pick up on those at all. The movie had some very funny bits and Frozone was great. We all thought his character was funny.

Yes, it was rather dark for a Pixar movie, but as with all the others, there is a lot going on at one time visually and in the dialogue. I think it fit the PG rating just fine. The R rating would not have been appropriate.

We just saw it today... and my dh and I (who are TTC, and don't have a child yet) both agreed it was one of the first movies we've seen in the theater where we honestly didn't mind that there were tons of children. (In fact, the kids were all very cute, and did cute things like repeating lines! "That's amazing" said the little boy next to us. I wholeheartedly agreed!)

However, I can understand that it might be a little too scary for some little ones. That said, it wasn't like being in The Fellowship of the Ring, where the four year old in front of us was shivering and shaking all through the movie, and his parents didn't care. That is our usual experience of kids at the movie theater: not appropriate at all!

Oh, and BTW, I loved the movie! There were a few things that annoyed me (catch the mom checking out her bum in the mirror and her sigh in reaction -- why can't they show a woman being happy with her bum????) But overall, I really enjoyed it There were a lot of film quotes in it, which made me happy as a film geek

Yeah, I can tell from the previews it's way more violent (explosions, guns, etc...) than other Pixar movies : I'm not thrilled about it. * I * don't encourage TV/DVD movies (I am anti-) but DH disagrees with me and takes him to movies.

They are going next weekend to El Capitan Theater in Hollywood - owned by Disney to see it (with a floor show!)
