Need some movie rental recommendations!

A friend of mine is going through an extremely difficult time, and was asking me what kind of movies she could rent that would be interesting enough to distract her from her problems, but not so intense and thought provoking that she would end up getting more upset.

I know she loved Calendar Girls, Waking Ned Devine, Kofax, Hi Fidelity.... I also recommended Happy Accidents, Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

She usually prefers British and/or independent films. Any suggestions?

Has she seen "snatch" or "lock, stock, and two smoking barrels"? both very funny and engaging. Bend it Like Beckham is good too.
You already recommended the other ones I was going to say!

Has she seen "Sliding Doors" with Gweneth Paltrow? I really enjoyed that one.

I really liked Bend it like Beckham, too AND Sliding Doors.
Does she like Foreign Films? Antonia's Line is a GREAT one - as was Monsoon Wedding.

The Station Agent was great. How about Election? Waiting for Guffman.

About a Boy with Hugh Grant was good if you like him...which I do.

If she likes foreign films Amelia' was really good, also "Mostly Martha" was a good movie.

Best In Show is very funny.

My suggestions...

Love, Actually - (English) 10 separate (but intertwining) London love stories, leading to a big 'deal' on Christmas Eve. Comedy-drama

Amelie - (French) A young woman lives alone and finds a mass of toys hidden away for years behind a baseboard in her apartment and she decides to find the people to whom the items belong to and give them back which sparks a whole slew of benevolent acts. Comedy-drama

Whale Rider - (NZ) Despite the discouragement of her disapproving (and thoroughly grouchy and chauvantistic!)grandfather a 12-year-old girl is convinced that she is the next tribal leader of their Maori tribe and she sets about to prove it. Mythical journey tale. Drama

Bend It Like Beckham - (English) A teen Indian girl who loves soccer and has great talent challenges her traditional family who want her to live as a traditional Indian woman. Comedy- drama

Lucky 7 - (American/Canadian) The main character was seven when her mother died and before she passed the mother outlined her daughter's life on a small piece of paper, right down to marrying her seventh boyfriend. She is up to boyfriend number six (a lawyer like herself) but tries to work fate so that he can be her 7th by going on a weekend date with the "bagel guy" and trying to make him the 6th... but... Light, made for TV

Under the Tuscan Sun - (American/Italian) - After a rough divorce the main character is persuaded by her friend to take a tour of Italy. She grudginly decides to go and on a whim she buys a rundown villa and sets out to renovate it while renewing her sense of passion for life.

Hope this helps!

Everlasting Piece--Irish movie about two guys, one Catholic, one Protestant, living in Northern Ireland. They go into the toupee business together after meeting while working as barbers in a mental institution. The title is a pun related to hairpieces. Dh and I really enjoyed it.

For pure escapist fun (which it sounds like she needs), "School of Rock" was extremely funny, and an all around fun and inspiring movie. The music was great, too.
