snap setters?

I bought a snap setter for size 16 snaps and a size 20 adaptor for it to put snaps on my diapers. I got this snap setter: http://www.sewbaby.com/notions1c.html. I'm wondering if I need to return it, though, because I think it is made only for metal snaps and I have plastic snaps. The problem is the plastic point in the middle of the plastic snap doesn't go down and you can't use the snaps once they're attached. I can't afford a snap press though I would like one. My friend installed the snaps on all my diapers with her snap press, but she moved.

Should I return the snap setter? Is there some trick I'm not getting? Or should I just spend the money and get a snap press? Or is there some third option that I haven't seen yet?

I may be wrong but I was told they are only for use with metal snaps, I believe you need a snap press for plastic snaps.

I've heard there are people who will attach snaps for like 10 cents each.
