I have a bolt of tulle left from my wedding that I want to use for ds ocean canopy (see fairy/canopy thread) and wondering if I could dye this?

You could dye it with procion dyes. Just be gentle!

yes that what I was going to use! it's ivory not white though. will it still work?

My first thought is that you can't dye it becasue it's pretty much plastic. Tulle goes on sale at JoAnns' for super cheap though so you could just buy more in another blue colour so that when the white/blue are layered they have a nice effect.

that's what I was thinking that it was made of plastic. I guess I won't know unless I try though? I think I will see what I can maybe find at the store first.

Procion mught work, but Rit from your local store would probably work better. It binds better to polyester or nylon than procion dyes which are made to bind to natural fibers.

Dharma sells dyes specific for polyester. dharmatrading.com

Tulle is nylon. Unless you have a fine tulle that's made of silk.

I'd add that at Walmart at about 77 cents a yard for the inexpensive stuff, it might just be worth buying the color you want, unless you're doing silk. If it's silk, then by all means, dye it! I'd still recommend dharma for the dyes though, and lots of how-to info as well.

you could just dye a small piece and see how it turns out.

I sent some tulle canopies to be tie-dyed by a wahm and she sent them back and said that she tried but since they were polyester that they wouldn't take the dye. If the tulle were made of cotton that it would die but dyes, wether it be procion or rit, will not 'take' to plastic. She tried though, and you can see a very faint blue tint, but nothing more Great idea though! The sea canopy you were looking at for inspiration, aren't they gauze?? Good luck!
