Original Pine cone craft idea?

We're having a local mother's group holiday party, and are looking for nice ideas for the kids to make something using pine cones, but we're trying to avoid the glue/glitter thing or the peanut butter/birdseed idea....we already have a paint project and don't want too many messy crafts at once, kwim?

Are there any other pine cone craft ideas out there? Any and all appreciated!

What about wrapping string or wire around the fat end/bottom of 5 of them and then joining the string to make a star? They look cute for holiday decorations. Of course this is coming from the girl who puts real birds nests on her tree evry year!

how about a pine cone turkey? We used to make them in school, and we just used colored feathers, real or paper, let me see if I can find a link to something similar.

we didn't use an acorn though, we just used paper for the turkey head too.
