Yarn substitutes and patterns

I want to make a poncho from Stitch N Bitch book......"Cape Mod"......but the pattern calls for a really expensive bulky wool.

when your subbing yarn......do you just make gauge.....changing needle sizes until you get the right gauge?

or do you so something else to substitute the yarn used in the pattern??

Im even considering using a wool blend that is comperable in wt......though Id rather use 100%wool......

Just use whatever yarn/needles (or hook) that will get you the guage specified. If it's a fuzzy looking cape, you may want to take that into consideration when picking a yarn.

I try to use a yarn of the same gauge, and them make sure you make gauge by doing swatches w/different needle sizes.
