weirdo question about flannel jammies

I'd like to make pajamas for several people/kids for Christmas. I noticed on the side of all the flannels I want to use that they say that the fabric is not for childrens sleepwear! Well...ummm that's why I bought it. So are they just saying this to cover theirselves legally in case a kid catches on fire or should I really not use it??

I realize this may be a dumb question but I'd rather be safe than sorry

I believe it is because it is law that anything that is labeled as children's sleep wear must be treated with the flame retardant stuff. I make a point to stay away from that stuff. :LOL

I agree with the above- I think it's basically to cover their butts in case something does happen. So much of the available children's sleepwear out there is either treated or 100% polyester, and I have read several places saying that 100% cotton is not appropriate for sleepwear. HAHAHAHAHA!!

Federal law mandates that children's sleepwear must be flame-retardant. That means that it must either be treated with nasty chemicals OR fit snugly.

Just as the PPs, I try and stay away from the chemical treated stuff. In fact, that's a big reason I'm making flannel jammies for my kids for Christmas. That way I can give them comfy jammas that aren't chemical laden

Wow!! So before I make any pajamas I'll be sure that it always has all the legal mumbo jumbo on the side before buying it

Thanks mamas! Off to sew some warm and snugglie jammas!

for anyone that wants it - stores do sell fabric that is flame retardant as well as you can get a product from dharma trading that you put the fabric into to make it flame retardant

what i read one time was that when 100% cotton burns it will turn to ash and fall off the body

whereas things like polyester will melt and adhere to the body making worse burns.

this is not a way of advocating you ignore the flame retardant chemicals, just stating what i understand to be factual information
