I really like Caleb Carr's books, they are historical fiction/thriller/murder mystery books. The only two I know of are The Alienist and its sequel, The Angel of Darkness. Anything by Edward Rutherfurd (yes, that's the right spelling of his last name). He tells the history of a region (Sarum, London, Dublin, Russia) and tells it through families in that area, from pre-history to the present. They're looooong books, but I usually read them in a couple of days because I can't put them down.
