Historical Fiction Please

Any suggestions? My mil is interested in reading some HF, and I thought I'd ask if anyone has any thoughts? Nothing too intellectual, and some romance wouldn't hurt

(the?) "Year of Wonders" by Geraldine Brooks was fabulous! It's about a town infected with plague that decided to close itself off. Very interesting.

I really like Caleb Carr's books, they are historical fiction/thriller/murder mystery books. The only two I know of are The Alienist and its sequel, The Angel of Darkness. Especially the first one is kind of graphic in places and neither one is a romance. But they are tasty, quick, interesting reads.

I really enjoyed Maragret Atwood's Alias Grace.

What about Girl with a Pearl Earring or Lady and the Unicorn by Tracy Chevalier? I loved these books!

Anything by Edward Rutherfurd (yes, that's the right spelling of his last name). He tells the history of a region (Sarum, London, Dublin, Russia) and tells it through families in that area, from pre-history to the present. They're looooong books, but I usually read them in a couple of days because I can't put them down.

The Other Boleyn Girl by Phillippa Gregory. It's totally engrossing, not too intellectual, a bit racy without being pornographic...some romance too.

I like author Janette Oke. She has really great Historical Fiction.
