Hemoglobin A1C vs. Glucose tolerance test

At my 20 week appointment, after refusing many tests, the nurse practitioner I was seeing mentioned that a Hemoglobin A1C can be done for those who cannot tolerate the Glucose tolerance test.

I know that the Hemoglobin A1C test reflects the blood sugar level 100-120 days before the test. The higher the percentage, the more glucose the RBCs were exposed to.

Diabetics ususally take this test to see how well they are controlling their sugar, but has anyone heard of using this test during pregnany?

I wouldn't think this would be very accurate considering most women start having problems around 28 weeks. My endocrinologist did this test on me with my first pregancy after I was diagnosed to see if it was really undiagnosed type 2. But since my results came back normal versus the high GTT she determined GD.

Yep, what MommyAmanda said. I'm not sure if your nurse practitioner is trying to get a guage as to if you're really a Type 2 diabetic but the Hemoglobin A1C is definitely NOT a good substitute for taking the GTT. If you don't want to take the GTT, what is a good substitute (again, if you're concerned you might have high blood sugar) is to test your own blood sugar and regular times throughout the day for a few days. As in, upon waking (before eating), immediatley before breakfast, 1 hr after breakfast, 2 hrs after breakfast, and last thing at night. This is probably a far better measure of actual problems regulating blood sugar than the GTT anyway. Those little test kits are available at any drugstore or your healthcare provider's office may be able to get one for you.
