My first diaper! (pictures included) - Page 2

Oh thanks Shelly! I'm actually pretty excited to hit the fabric store this weekend! And at this very moment I'm considering making Nathan a pair of shorts with my left over flannel from the diaper! :LOL

Jayne - I am so glad you got the pictures up (and you're camera fixed). That hemp outer side touchtape turned out soo well! It looks completely professional! Aren't you impressed with yourself? Look at your first diaper and now you're last diaper. I'm amazed! If you can make a professional looking diaper I bet I can too! Very inspiring!

Trish - Yep, the hook part is attached to the front. I do the fold back tabs so that the loop side is attached to the hook itself and not seperately sewn onto the inside of the front of the diaper because I find it keeps the hook and loop closer together and allows the loop to not touch Nathan for a longer period of growth. I copied this style from Earth Seedlings (formerly known as Buckeye Bottoms). Would you like a picture close up? I bet you can't wait for Christmas! How exciting! I would love a new sewing machine! I guess I'll put that on next year's list! You'll have to share pictures of your work when you get the machine. I'll look foward to see'ing them. Until then if you do hand sew another - share it! I bet you'd do well with knitting if you like to sew enough to hand sew!

I too am going to attempt to make my own diapers. I'm so excited reading all your post. I always feel like if other mamas can do, so can I. I keep stalking OSDS waiting for them to reopen. I really want to make the Very Baby pattern. I am slowly ordering supplies that I think I'll need from various coops. I just ordered some Aplix and some PUL. I'm on the hunt now for elastic. I'm not sure what kind I'll need. I'm probably just gonna have to wait until OSDS reopens so I can see the supply list. : Patience is not a virtue that I have a huge supply of.

I am so excited to make my own. I'm probably crazy because I've only sewn a handful of things and none of them were masterpieces. We'll see......

Jayne, your diapers are amazing! You have inspired me to start sewing again. I have all sorts of cute fabrics (my favorite worn-out tye-dye tshirt that I adore, for one) that would be so good. I think I'll go the pocket fitted route too. I have been making fitteds AKA VeryBaby with external unfastened soakers (as I have no snap press), but I think I like the idea of shoving the soaker inside, especially if someone other than me will be doing the diapering. Very easy, no? Just leave the back seam unsewn.... And stuffers are so easy and get so clean. Plus I just ordered 4 yards of hemp fleece/terry , so I have to do SOMETHING with it!

But where do you find the time?? Don't you sleep?

Jenn, I can't believe I didn't think of this when I read your post yesterday -- amber's directions for the elastic are zig-zag-less! So I'm sure that your dipes will go faster once you see how she does it.

Thank you, Lise! I do sleep. lol I don't have a tv, though, which may help. Still, I wish that I could have two hours a day to do whatever I wanted with. Dh doesn't seem to be volunteering to make that happen, though. <<sigh>>

I am doing pockets because I want to be able to bleach my hemp stuffers when they start to smell without bleaching the whole pocket (I have bleached all of my hemp stuff twice and it was the only thing I tried that worked on the smell). I think right now I have two pockets with hemp in them and I guess I'll go ahead and bleach them if I need to, but I'm trying to resist the impulse to put hemp in the pocket part. The celestial one has a hemp layer and it really made it too bulky, anyway. In the future, I'll use something like cotton interlock when I use a woven for an outer (needs another layer with it to make it more substantial). Anyhow, I really hate the stink factor, too, but I adore the trimness.

Jayne - Awesome! I got bored and made a pair of shorts out of the left over flannel (it's still 80 in Hawaii) and they turned out fabulous.. also I was able to figure out why I had all kinds of tension problems with the bobbin so now that everything is working well I'm SO excited about making the next diaper!!

Oh you guys are going to start again! How exciting!! I am absolutely loving sewing again! Nothing I made in the past was very nice (hey it was 8th grade) but these are really turning out well! We can all do it! WooHoo! We're sewing diapers! How fun!!
