Bulkier yarn

I'm looking for bulkier yarn for making hats. My lys only sells one weight of wool yarn, and it doesn't say on the label what it is. It says 20 sts = 10 cm (4") on 4 1/2 mm (U.S. 7) needles; 223 yds/204 metres; net wt. 3 1/2 oz./100 g. It seems to be about the same as what most of the yarn I see is. I've used two strands together to make thicker hats before, but I don't like the way it looks with a varigated yarn, since the colours don't match up. I would like to find some plain/natural yarn that I can dye. Any suggestions? I'm in Canada, btw. TIA

Well, here in the states, one can usually find Lion Brand Fisherman's wool at most craft stores. It is dyable, though I am not sure that I would call it bulky. I love Brown Sheep's Lamb's Pride Bulky. You could just buy a natural color & dye it BUT it does come in lots of great colors and is pretty inexpensive. Doing a simple search should give you a few stores. I get mine at patternworks.

what about cascade eco wool? It comes in natural wool shades, from off white to oatmeal to brown, so you could get darker colors from dyeing the darker stuff. I haven't knit with it, yet, but the gauge says 3.5" per inch on size 10 needles, so it's a bit bulkier than worsted. I got it at my lys, and I've seen it on-line at lots of places, so you shouldn't have trouble finding it.
