Birthing Necklace - Bead Exchange Thread

I know that I at least am planning on making a birthing necklace, and would love to include you guys in it, because I really don't know how I would've gotten thru this at least semi sane without having this group to compare symptoms with, vent at, etc.

So, If you'd like to be part of a group that sends each other beads for necklace, bracelet, whatever... (and the way i envision it, say we have a group of 15 people who want to play, everyone gets 15 beads, and sends one bead to each of the 15 mama's. Small beads wouldn't even need boxes.), please post your willingness here, say by December 10, and then I'll send private PM's to accumulate an address list, then get that distro'd.

Anyone in?

Not sure I'd know how to make a birthing necklace but I'm hoping you can provide some instruction! In which case, yep, I'm in.

I'm kind of a beading fanatic.
The idea of a birthing necklace is that you have this pile of beads that have been given to you - and in theory each person who gives you one, puts their intentions into it for your birth to be gentle, etc. Then when you have all your beads, you string them (you can use yarn, upolstry thread, beading wire from hobby lobby, basically anything), and wear them until baby arrives. Its a way of wearing the blessings of your community and having them be tied to your birth. Its also a tangible support piece.

What kind of beads - Whatever kind you want. I'm partial to gemstones, and get mine wholesale from www.firemountaingems.com I've seen some beautiful handmade fimo beads be used - that would certainly work beautifully (and now as i mention that hm... i haven't FIMO'd in ages.... oh the nesting....), I've seen this work with big beads and with little beads... Really, thats the fun part, is picking / making your beads.

As far as making the necklace / bracelet - hobby lobby and micheals all have jewelry making supplies... you go get some wire / string / yarn, and bead like a mad fool

Thanks I was doing a search trying to figure it out. That would be a neat thing to add to the blessingway my dh is "supposed" to be giving me.

Sounds wonderful, count me in.

My girlfriends did something like this for me at my hen's night before my wedding. Each gal brought a bead which either meant something to her or represented me in some way. They told their stories related to the bead and then one gal beaded them all right there at the table. By the end of the night, I had a unique and really personal necklace, which I wore to the rehearsal dinner and wear on some occasions.

I love the thought of adding our blessings to one another and supporting each other through our births. Even if you just string the beads in a row and don't wear them, but have them as "prayer beads" of a sort, what a wonderful idea!

I'd like to be in on this. I did something similar on another board with my last pregnancy - everyone went out & found the coolest glass beads they could find, and all us expecting mamas macrame'd them into a hemp necklace. I made mine into a choker, unfortunately, and had to take it off when I was in labor because it was choking me I remade it into a longer necklace after Davey came.

This is such a beautiful idea - I absolutely love it So it sounds like I can ask other family and friends for a bead from them too and add it to the string right? That's really cool, what a good luck charm and nice momento for the baby. I'm going to e-mail my friends now and I hope they aren't losers and actually get me a bead!!!

I've started to get some beads from family and friends and OMG this is so great. Everyone of them has made me cry! :LOL

My favorite so far was from my mother which was off the baby bracelet that she wore when she was born!!! Back then they didn't have the cheesey laminated plastic kind, they had these adorable beaded ones. Too sweet.

Can't wait to start exchanging beads with you ladies too

I'm hoping to get to the bead store soon, it's so hard with all the holiday junk going on, but I will do my best to get the beads out ASAP.

I got an envelope from Stell, and there was a tear in it, and a hole in the wipe inside. Looks like it must have gone through a sorter-type of machine, and that created a tear. No bead inside. I liked the drawing, though! Who was my artist?
